I am into R/C aircraft and am an instructor -> at a club in Ontario. Who want's to chat? :) Hi Rob. I just got my system hooked into this echo. I've always wanted to do some R/C flying but never got around to it. I once had a friend that built R/C planes. He has since moved and I don't know anyone into the hobby. I'd like to know, though, how I would get started in the hobby? Should I get one of those cheap ones first and work my way in? How hard is it to get the hang of flying a R/C plane? A brief update of the RICHELIEU project. One of the advantages of being a model boater in Winnipeg is that you can't get into the water for most of the year. That gives you a lot of time to spend on construction. My original design philosophy for the RICHELIEU was to build an absurdly strong ship. With each passing day, I seem to be building even more features into that philosophy. Case in point: I have just finished the carving of the bow. Though my initial material of choice was basswood, boredom and a fanatical killer instinct caused me to switch to a rather massive and heavy chunk of old-growth white oak. Most of the "carving" was done on a band saw with final shaping accomplished with sandpaper. It looks good. Once the early stages of fibreglassing have been completed, the lower "chin" of the bow will have a 1/8" thick bar of steel (about 8" long) recessed into it. I sincerely expect that this will deter anyone from engaging the ship in the careless ramming accidents that victimised my HMCS WINNIPEG model:-). One more item of housekeeping for the week: drydock work on the DALLAS. IT's always nice to have an excuse to work on that boat. In this case, I have to refresh the charge on a number of batteries used for the sub's operation. So I get to haul her out of the basement and crack open the hull. Interestingly, even though I'm a member of THE SUBCOMMITTEE (an 850 member group of sub modelers worldwide), I have never run across ANYONE else operating this boat. Hmmm...in fact, mine was the first to see operation when it was launched even before the manufacturer's prototype sailed. Guess they never sold too many of them. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Tech Talk Toll Wpg,MB (204)269-7373 INTERNET+ (1:348/105) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 131 RADIO CONTROL Ref: DGB00000 Date: 12/05/96 From: JAMES HANNA Time: 05:53pm \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: planes, etc. I have a r/c plane, known only as 'BAG-O-PLANE' around here. Some know it as a Dura-plane. I will let new pilots know that if you are not wanting to spend lots to start AND to continue, start with one that has a stiro-foam wing, balsa tail section, and pvc (or similar) fuselage. I have crashed too many times to count and it always came out mostly okay. The last crash will cost around $30.00, but I am the one that crashed, I was goofing off. I have been flying for a couple of years now and it is great, if the weather is decent. Lately, I enjoy flying when the wind is gusting no more than to 20mph and no less than 8mph. I found that it makes it easier to fly higher and faster, which gets me up around 4 to 5 mistakes high. Plenty of room up there for everyone. Come join the fun. Anyone want to chat? I am from a Club here in Medicine Hat, AB. I used to fly Ra RR>Control Planes but I got into Gliders but I am thinking of getting back RR>into power. So what kinds of Airplanes do you fly? I have various types of planes. I learned to fly with a Eagle2 and went on to a Cub and a 4-Star. I am now flying a Sig Cougar. What can I say, I love the spee :) I have also flown gliders in the past too. We usually tow then with a ower plane because we are too lazy to set up the highstart :) RR>So how is your flying feild out there?? Is it all Grass or paved? Our RR>flying feild has grass. We are lucky to have a beautiful 2.5 acre grass field. We also have access to paved strips at a old airport, but no one seems to bother with it too much. A couple years ago I had the pleasure to fly at a field in Whitecourt AB. while on vacation. RR>So I hope this year sometime soon is to get my RR>Wings in Gliders hopefully this winter or next spring or summer. I wish you luck in getting your wings. I hope to have more time to get to the field and get more flying in. It's almost time to bring out the skies here now :) TTYL Rob --- * PW * Space is curved. I still have a tug on the go and the swamp has now been flattened and seeded, (soon to become an airport). My hands are all dry and cracked from hammering in the damp cold weather. Fido node numbers can be confusing as I live in Tucson, Arizona. I race R/C asphalt oval cars instead of flying. Dave --- GoldED/2 2.51.A1026+ * Origin: Daves MailBox (1:300/19)
