MF> "A scout is a Friend to All" Each country's scouting organization is individually organized, and reflects the culture of that country. Scout Troops in the mid-east would have *no* involvement by women or girls, but this is common in Canada, for example. In the BSA adult women can be leaders at most every level, and young women can be involved in the Explorer and Venture level at age 14 to 21. In the Boy Scouts of America, the charter specifies a belief in God and being lawful as a requirement for joining and participating. Atheists, homosexuals, and convicted felons do *not* meet these requirements. Those who cannot affirm these beliefs and requirements are welcome to form their own organization, as long as they do not make use of any resources from BSA, and do not call themselves anything that can be confused with the BSA. There are other organizations that have been formed precisely because of this, such as the Indian Guides, which was formed early in this century by a man who had a difference of opinion with the organizers of the BSA. Hi Don! Well, you asked what our unit is doing, so here goes: Troop 303 was going to have a campout and court of honor on March 13 and 14, but had to call it off because of the heavy snows and bitter temperatures. We have re-scheduled the court of honor for March 23; which we'll have at the church with a potluck supper. The campout will be next month (and hopefully warmer.) On March 21st is Tom's Eagle Court of Honor ceremony. It's something else planning one of these. We have everything on hand except for the presentation pack and the flowers that Tom is going to give to me and my mother. Two cakes are being made by a friend and will be delivered on Saturday morning. One week ago, our Scoutmaster stepped down citing that his job was getting more chaotic and he didn't have the time necessary to devote to the Troop. My husband, John, became the Scoutmaster. Pack 3303 is planning a field trip during spring break. We recently had an enrollment explosion, thanks to district's "boy talk" sessions with a couple of elementary schools. We added 20 new Cubs to our pack. We had our Blue and Gold banquet on 2/28/98 with a packed house. It was great. John and I are involved with both BSA and CSA. John is an Assistant Webelos Den Leader and I'm a Bear Den Leader. Our sons are involved too. Tom is an Assistant Bear Den Leader, and Steve is a Webelos Den Chief. It is our opinion that if we help the Pack, those boys will move up to the Troop and will stay active in Scouting. Parents get to know us and trust us. All our of den meetings are held at the church, so no one has to clean house or parents don't have to worry about who's house their child is going to. It promotes safety for the boys as well as the leaders in an easy setting. Anyway, Don, that's all that's going on with Troop 303 and Pack 3303 at this moment. BP> Are you sure this is a Boy Scout Troop? :-) (running and BP> ducking) If they had planned to run the compass courses it wouldn't have been much fun in the rain. There are several places on some of the courses that you have to cross creeks. And they aren't done on the road, you go through the woods. On the back 9 of one course you have to go up and down some pretty steep hills, in rain and a rainy season some damage could be done that would cause erosion. But I doubt that the courses would have even been open.
