I hate the fact that once you make an all important decision to buy that new computer all the software companies quit supporting the hardware and you either; (a) Need to update before you even have unpacked the computer from the box. (b) Start writing your own software. (c) Do (b) and find out your your old compiler doesn't work properly on your new computer so you need to do (a) and (d). (d) Buy a new compiler and find out that it doesn't support your particular hardware so you have to do (a). (e) Forget the whole mess and start tweaking everytime you add something, which of course requires 2 other things to run properly and when you finally get it working it isn't fun anymore so it collects dust. (f) Take up drinking as a sport. DC> When it is usefull, a men MUST use that stuff, and nothing else. You betcha! My MOST USEFUL, as well as MOST USED, software was written over two decades ago. QEdit (use it ALOT!!! Got the newest upgrade but still haven't even unpacked it since my oldest version still does everything I need it to), WHEREIS.EXE (I got this off a VAX/VMS system and modified it to run on my first 386. It still works!), Word Perfect 5.0 (upgraded from an earlier 286 version. Use it to print out 3D, 256 grayscale magnetic field maps. Windows 3.1 claimed my hardware couldn't handle it so I punted it. Funny thing is my hardware not only CAN handle it BUT does it better and faster than Windows doing a scaled down 16 grayscale version of the same maps!) and some other assorted utilities. I don't think I have many newer versions of anything since they don't work as well as their ancestors, proving the old adage, "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
