Taft, Computer Reseller News Sun Microsystems Inc.'s agreement with Intel Corp. to optimize Solaris for the Intel Merced goes right after Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT enterprise strategy. By joining with Intel to support the next-generation Merced chip, Sun delivers a lot more credibility to its enterprise strategy. "What the world wanted to hear is that Sun and Intel are working together," said Janpieter Scheerder, president of SunSoft, Sun's system software business unit. Sun has pledged to deliver a 64-bit version of Solaris for the Merced when the chip becomes available in 1999. In addition, Scheerder said the performance and scalability of the Solaris operating system will outshine that of competing OSes, particularly Windows NT. John Miner, vice president and general manager of Intel's Enterprise Server group, said Intel is content to "let the market decide" which operating system customers want. He added that the decision to partner with Sun is "not an acknowledgment on our part regarding Windows NT." Rather, he said, Intel has acknowledged that customers want to run Solaris on their Intel platforms. Scheerder said Sun's goal with this announcement is to penetrate the enterprise. Indeed, availability on Intel will boost Solaris volume sales. Yet, Scheerder said Solaris will only be part of the Sun enterprise story. He said the combination of Solaris, the Solstice Enterprise Manager, Java and other Sun technologies will enable Sun to outpoint Microsoft and others in head-to-head competition. "Increasingly, the distinguishing factors are how good the underlying hardware is and how good your system software is," Scheerder said. Sun also announced a Solaris-on-Intel porting and tuning center to help ISVs and OEMs tune and optimize applications for Solaris on Intel. NCR Corp., Sun's most recent licensee for Solaris on Intel, praised the Sun-Intel deal. "The Sun cooperation with Intel is great news in key industries such as retail, finance and telecommunications, where NCR customers will want to leverage the price/performance advantage" of Solaris on the Merced, said Bill Eisenman, senior vice president of NCR's Computer Systems Group, in a prepared statement. He added that NCR "plans to take full advantage of Intel's next-generation 64-bit processor and to sell and support Solaris on NCR WorldMark Servers." Sun and Intel also signed a cross-licensing agreement covering microprocessors, systems and software, though the companies would not give specifics on the agreement. The deal falls in line with the road map Sun laid out at its Inside Sun Software Day last month. At that event, the company laid out its enterprise software strategy and discussed Solaris for the Enterprise and further direction of the operating system on 64-bit platforms. Some observers noted that Sun could potentially lose sales of its SPARC-based computers to those powered by Intel processors. Scheerder said he did not foresee that scenario. "The big deal is to get as many Solaris customers as we can get and to unify the Unix market," he said. In doing so, he added, "we can bring more attention to SPARC." --- Sqed/32 1.14/r15155 * Origin: T-Shirts 'N Genes BBS - (250) 748-3408 v32b v42b XA CM (1:340/204) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 129 OP. Sure - use CED or DOSKEY, to name just two possibilities. With csh you'd say "alias up cd..", with CED it's "ced syn up cd..", both ans quotes. CED allows you to specify a file with synonyms (aliases) when you oad it. Since the DOS shell program, i.e. COMMAND.COM, doesn't "do" aliases, a rogram that does is necessarily a TSR. Another possibility is installing a command processor that *does* do aliases: 4DOS springs to mind. Note: while DOSKEY already comes with DOS, I would recommend using CED, as it has the emormously handy capability of remembering the command line arameters of specified programs. If you are a programmer, this is most addictive: suppose you use editor ED and compiler CP. Instead of repeatedly typing "ed filename options" and/or "cp filename1 filename2 ... options", you tell CED to "pcall" ED and CP, you type the magic incantions just once, and every next time you simply type "ed" and "cp", and CED fills in the rest. Nobel Prize stuff, this. Peter (who's been using CED since 1987, and is a big fan - can you tell ?) N.B.: is anyone aware of a later version of CED than 1.0E ? ... That is the real issue/controversy methinks. I thought of buying a new computer and went to a place to check out prices. I asked if I could purchase one without Win95 on it and the salesperson informed me that they need to install it to check out the HD et al (or is it etal??? Getting old and forgetful). There are other OS's that can handle this but apparently computer retailers can't understand choices and/or options. So much for that idea. I think if I do buy a new computer I will build my own. I hate to think that I am supporting a monopoly even though I would reformat the HD as soon as I bought it anyhow. MK>> Maybe I'd invest the money in MicroSoft, heh, heh. Well I am a terrible business-type person anyhow. Although I have some great ideas that turn out winners, I never follow through on them, or get convinced by others that they are not as good as they originally sound. I hate when these same people come back to me and say that I was right. No glory in being right if you don't take advantage of it. Maurice ...
