AA> ie., play it without sound. Hardly a solution. The OS/2 version of No, you just needed to direct the FX to the PC speaker vice the sound card. Granted that ain't much, but it worked. The problem is that id changed libraries and the one used for the newer versions is buggy. AA> Playing games over a 32 machine network becomes hard with a AA> playstation. Playing games over the internet is also difficult. Again, not a critical point on which to hinge my choice of OS. If I truly cared about such things, I'd probably be having a look at this game.com thing I've been seeing on TV, since it's supposed to have internet connectivity. Truth is, I've never played online games, ever. Not when BBS's were going strong and games were why a lot of people called them. Yes, I enjoyed playing Doom across the network at work a few years ago, but it's not like I'm going to base my choice of home system on that. The network Doom I played was prior to our moving to our current location. I'm the net admin at this location, and I never even bothered with installing Doom (or anything else) on it. It's just not that big of a deal. Bottom line is, I didn't buy a computer to have a game machine. I certainly won't base my OS choice on gaming. Besides, with the Boot Manager provided with OS/2, it's simple enough to keep a small DOS bootable partition around to boot to if I do actually want to play any of the more demanding games. kabrams@erols.com * RM 1.3 03106 * --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.1b * Origin: BBS Networks @ www.bbsnets.com 301-863-5089 (1:2612/10) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 129 OP. I suggest you read up on what has been going on with it. Let me give you just one little thing to look at: ---------------------------------------------------- New Caffeine Benchmark scores are beginning to appear for the latest IBM Java release (1.1.4 Java VM for OS/2) and it is scoring in at 40-50% faster than the previous version. It is not only more up to date compared to any other Java M other than Sun's (no JIT) reference implementation, but it also attains the highest CaffeineMark scores for Intel machines including IE4 running on NT. This could be because IBM, Netscape, Sun, Borland and several other companies have been working together at the San Francisco Bay Area Java Performance and Tuning Center in tandem to do it. MS refused to participate and are now the loser while these other guys win and they have now slipped from first place to a much lower position in the Java performance arena and expected to drop to last place. I've used it in some of my web pages and have seen some development stuff for it. I've never used it much b/c I haven't found much for my DOS/Linux combo... In any case, it's always been slow on my computer (Windows) and on my Uncle's (Win95, Pentium100, etc). Java just seems like a return to the old days, imo. > No Charge Gee, thanks for that token of, umm, wisdom. Being kludgey is only a matter of taste, and the standards committee is right on the edge of declaring Java a *true* standard.. Java 1.1.4 running under OS/2 is currently the fastest available on any Intel platform, I'm not seeing slow.. I downloaded some win95 stuff last week with no luck at installing. As in basis it is still Win3.1 but From what I've seen in Win95, I've got all the bells and whistles without all the bugs and crashes (oh, I'd better duck for cover from that comment). But one person said a couple weeks ago a comment I think fits all these conflicts, "It's not a matter of which OS is better as long as the OS you have suits your purposes. If it does all you need it to do then it's still valuable." With people talking more and more I'm thinking of writing some of my own utilities, If I can figure out how. >:D --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: ::: The KBC BBS ::: (1:260/310) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 129 OP.
