Tischer wrote in a message to All: KJT> I've recently heard of something called OS/9. Could KJT> someone tell me what it is exactly? OS/9 was a product of Microware. It is designed for use with Motorola 6809 processors and was most commonly found on Radio Shack Color Computers -- there is still an active backbone echo (OS9) and quite a bit of discussion about OS/9 in the CoCo echo. A later version (OS/68K) runs on the Motorola 680xx family. In many ways, OS/9 was influenced by Unix and offered such goodies as dynamically loadable device drivers. One friend of mine is still using it on a CoCo III with 512K of memory -- his comment on OS/2 PPC was that finally an Intel OS had dynamically loadable drivers. From my experience with Windows95, I would argue it is slower than OS/2. You suggested Windows95 can handle 8-10 applications on your well equipped computer (a Pentium, I presume, with 32Mb RAM). I consider 8-10 pplications a normal load on my old 486. The other day I opened 30 applications (all running concurrently) with 130 threads, in the course of a day. As usualy OS/2 preformed like a wonder. Windows95, on the otherhand, has trouble with one application on my 486 (as I explained the other day).
