It's all well and good to wish -> every person who wanted a pet, would go to the local 'pound' but -> some folk enjoy pedigree type cats and dogs. MK> I don't recall Ivy saying that her cats were pedigreed - I got MK> the impression that her cats were just ordinary housecats that's MK> she's breeding to get a brown mark across their shoulders... Not sure they are pedigreed, but the fact is she is being responsible about it and finds homes for them all. Grin, we arent talking someone just letting them loose to find thier own homes...or not... xxcarol --- Telegard v3.09.b18 * Origin: SHENK'S EXPRESS Norfolk VA 757-486-3057 28.8 Dual (1:275/100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 277 CATS Ref: FA300006 Date: 05/25/98 From: CAROL SHENKENBERGER Time: 03:27pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Bathing Cats- the new Martial art! * Message forwarded by Carol Shenkenberger via Telegard 3.09.b18 * Originally posted in area Local Tidewater Chatter ----------------- b e g i n f o r w a r d e d m e s s a g e --------------- Ok, it was that dreaded time. The cats needed a bath..... Don and I Gurded our loins (literally) and wore flack suits (almost literally). Heavy gloves. By the time we were dressed, they *knew* it boded no good. First you take Face (our Black longhair Kat). While making gyrations impossible to anyone not 2 years old, or bathing a Kat, you catch her and trap her in the bathroom. By now, you hear the other 2 Kats at the door, egging her on to !escape! No chance though. Don and i are experienced Kat bathers. Short of flushing herself down the toilet, there is no egress from the bathroom. 5 mins later, a wet Kat is allowed to escape. Flea dip accomplished. Now it's time to catch the next Kat! Thats Roscoe. He's the hardest to bathe. Next hardest to catch. (Face is hardest to catch). 3 mins later, and several moments of pure levitation, Roscoe emerges. He is dripping about 1 gallon of water and weighs almost 1/3 more than normal til he dries off. He's !miffed! as only a wet Himalayan can be. He stomps out to the back porch to dry off, next to Face. Now comes the easy one. Thom Kat. The only hard part about bathing him, is picking him up. He's sitting there, next to the bathroom, moping a little. Little bit bashful looking. We go 'here Thom, your turn' and he quietly but slowly enters the !dreaded flea dip room!. Lifted into the tub, he just quietly crowches in the lukewarm water. There's a lot of him, so it takes 6 mins to wash and rinse him off. We drain the tub, and he saunters out to the porch to comismerate with the others.... So, what did YOU all do today? xxcarol --- Telegard v3.09.b18 * Origin: SHENK'S EXPRESS Norfolk VA 757-486-3057 28.8 Dual (1:275/100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 277 CATS Ref: FA300007 Date: 05/25/98 From: JASON SEIPLE Time: 11:07am \/To: ROSS SAUER (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: Cats vs. Dogs RS> * Cats lay on the car in the heat. As I may have mentioned, I work at a local animal shelter and have to see the results of people's lack of responsibility ever day.. wether it's the stack of dead animals in the freezer, or the cages of wounded or ill unneutered/unspayed cats and dogs.. I can't deny that I see the attraction of a small, fuzzy kitten.. but when that kitten is alone is a cage at 4 weeks, abandoned by it's mother, and has a slim chance to survive.. it stops being cute, and starts being heart breaking. ... CS> xxcarol Granted Ivy is obviously a cat lover.. but who is to say that the folks that take her kittens will not let them breed over and over too? And I bet if Ivy kept track of all the kittes that she has helped bring in to the world, the numbers would be staggering.. I do not deny that kittens are adorable, fuzzy little angels that make your heart melt.. but they soon grow out of that stage and become lean, mean, breeding machines.. As a receptionist in an animal shelter I see far too many cats come in seriously injured, or even DOA because they weren't spayed/ neutered and either over bred, got hit by cars, or attacked by other animals while out searching for a mate. It is my hope that anyone who does breed cats or dogs would be required to have a breeding lisence, and a signed contract from all owners promising to spay or neuter thier pets. Just my two cents.. ... Hello all.. I just wanted to add my two cents about the care of pets.. I work for the SPCA in British Columbia. As a receptionist I get to hear a lot of stories, and see a lot of awful things right before my very eyes... If it's not the unneutered male cat with the huge, gaping abcess on his neck from fighting... It's the 8 week old kitten with a broken leg who's owner threw her against the wall for scratching a poster... or It's the puppy with Parvo virus because his owners never bothered to get his puppy shots until it is too late.. Then there are the folks who don't want to spare the expense of having thier pets spayed or neutered because it's too much money ($45 at our hospital) and then who dump the cat and her newly born litter of kittens off at the shelter because the "%$##%!@" thing got knocked up again. The SPCA is starting a program to help low income familes spay or netuer thier pets.. but pet care doesn't stop there.. there are vaccinations, vet appointments, grooming, and proper care of your pet. If anyone is tempted to buy that little puppy or that fuzzy kitten from a store or a friend.. please ask yourself these questions? Do I have enough money to pay for all the care that this animal needs? Will I be able to afford a medical bill if this pet does become sick? Will I be responsible enough to chose homes that allow pets rather than just bringing one home and finding out then? Will my pet have proper ID (tattoo, microchip) so that it can be traced back to me if it does get lost? Will I still love it even when it's no longer small and sweet, and it has just finished devouring my $150 pair of Reeboks, or shredding my new furniture. Will I have the patience to train it NOT to do these things, or will I just dump it off at the shelter and hope someone else will? Am I ready to be responsible for a little life that, God willing, should live up to 20 years? Will I research the breed I am interested to find out if it a> fits in my lifestyle b> will adapt to children if I should have them c> needs excessive exercise, obdience training, attention. Should I find out if there is a chance that I may have allergies BEFORE I take an animal home. Having a pet is a BIG responsibility. Unless you are considering all of these options, and really, truly feel that you can handle the responsibility.. maybe you should reconsider. A pet isn't something that can be brought out when you feel like it to show off to friends, or compliment your decor. They are living, breathing creatures who depend on us to give them a safe, secure home and the right to a healthy, happy life.. that's my two cents... ...
