Chocolate is a definate -> no-no for any animal. It's the next thing to feeding him poison. Try -> vanilla. Chocolate ice cream does NOT have enough real chocolate in it to be dangerous to a cat in the quantities any normal one would eat. For a dog, one ounce of chocolate (the actual product, NOT something with chocolate flavoring) per pound of animal is considered to normally be fatal, but many dogs can eat that much without serious effects, it's really the 'average' level that you never want to approach. In cats, the level isn't known, since cats, while also affected by the same ingredient (theobromin) are NOT as sensitive as dogs, AND usually eat far less at one time. I have never heard of a cat that was seriously affected by eating chocolate. It's not a good idea to 'over-warn' someone unless you're EXTREMELY sure of your facts. --- Platinum Xpress/386/Wildcat! v1.3e * Origin: FidoNet International Coordinator Emeritus, for life (1:202/746) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 277 CATS Ref: F3R00023 Date: 03/20/98 From: BRION LIENHART Time: 11:20am \/To: GUS GERE (Read 0 times) Subj: Animals On Thu Mar 19, Gus Gere said to Jay P. Depends on their -GG>personality. They can be just as singular as cats, or people for that -GG>matter. Furbag didn't use to be much of a lap cat, but now that he's going on six (He just moved in one day, I don't know exactly when he was born), he's much more snuggly. He likes to lay on my stomach and chest when I'm lying on the couch reading. The other day, I was sitting on the couch, and he crawled into my lap to be petted, for the first time ever. Of course, he's shedding like heck, so I had a cloud of fur all over my face. Squeaker is still stand-offish, she doesn't like to snuggle, or even be picked up at all. As I wrote to all of you which gave me lots of advice regarding the first meeting between cats and dogs, I now will tell you how the experiment worked out. Please forgive me if I am boring you... When the doorbell chimed I put the cats, Kurre and Murre, out to the balcony and closed the door. The dog went in to my apartment and became wary of the scent of the cats, he went sniffing everywhere, completely ignoring the both wildly meowing cats at the balcony. When i placed the halfgrowned puppy at the window they saw each other for the first time and became interested. The dog - Michelle - and Murre stood at their hind legs curiously watching each other, but Kurre calmly lay outstretched at the floor, aristocrately ignoring the newcomer. As no alarming events occurred, I opened the door and let Murre in since mother has taken place in the sofa together with the dog. Murre went straight ahaid to the dog, cautiously sniffing. So far, alls well. However the dog get scared, without that Murre have done any harming movement, so I have to remove the cat back to the balcony. A couple of minutes later I instead let Kurre in and under our supervision we let them acknowledge each other. At the end they stood sniffing each other nose to nose. Then the dog wanted to play, wildly waving its tail. At that time we dont have nerve enough to await Kurres reaction, so I separated them from each other. I dont know if we did it right, but my impression is that the first meeting went quite good and hope that it will continue smoothly like this next time they meet.
