Couple Tailors Home to Cats (c) The Associated Press AP-NY-01-05-98 SAN DIEGO (AP) -- If a man's home is his castle, then this house is a kitty kingdom. What started out as a small remodeling project -- including the installation of a floor-to-ceiling scratching post -- has grown into more than 100 feet of elevated catwalks and a home designed around the whims of Bob Walker and wife Frances Mooney's nine cats. "You do something for your cats and it takes on a life of its own" Walker said. To say the least. Walker, 48, and Mooney, 47, are professional picture framers and artists by trade. They decided to create an area for their cats that would challenge their feline instincts and keep them active in a 1,500-square-foot home. Now, TomCat, Jerry Lee, Bernard, Charlotte, Denise, Frank, Louise, Little Jimmy and Molly are in cat heaven. They first installed a support column and beam to hang a leaded glass window. The column became a fiber-covered scratching post, intersecting with a bright pink beam for catwalking. The cats took to it immediately. One problem, though: From there they had no place else to go. Soon the couple was cutting cat-sized holes through walls that allowed the cats to travel from one end of the home to the other -- without ever touching the ground. Then a carpeted ramp was installed for the older cats to make their way down. Toy mice hang suspended from their tails in cages, just a paw's reach away from the catwalks. A mouse skull-and-crossbones portal leads to a special "cats only" illuminated green room, tucked into the wall above a clothes closet. On a recent day, a zigzag, aerial walkway trimmed with neon leads down the hallway, where a cat that looks curiously like a Dalmatian dangles her paws at passers-by. "As I say, cats like to look down on us," Walker said. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: Kitty's Keep BBS * 714-871-2227 * Fullerton, CA * (1:103/441.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 277 CATS Ref: F1E00004 Date: 01/08/98 From: STEVE CROFT Time: 01:46pm \/To: MISS KITTY (Read 0 times) Subj: Socks MK>Did everyone see President Clinton on the news introducing MK>his new dog, Buddy, to the First Cat, Socks? We cured our cats of drinking from the toilet by leaving the lids down and supplying water in another room, away from their food. Their problem was that food was getting into the drinking water and messing it up. I don't know what to do about cats that operate taps, though. Things seemed pretty normal until I opened the tack room and assumed my normal defensive posture, awaiting the furry flood. And nothing happened. Nothing at all. One kitten sat on a blanket rack, staring at me. Another quietly washed her face. Two more, and the mother, sat atop the open wall, basking in the warm sunshine, something we haven't seen around here for weeks. And then it dawned on me.... I just saw a cat put down because of that stuff. What most people not realize is that no matter how clean, litter attaches to the cat, and the cat's natural grooming instincts cause the material to be injested. Poor kitten had total blockage, as the material clumped in the stomach. They say while wet, it won't clump. Tell that to the owner of 'Peaches'. The last time I laughed that hard at an ad on TV, was during last year's Super Bowl (Packers won, YEAH!) when they first showed this ad for Nissan with a bunch of pigeons as fighter pilots, and the "leader" crashes into the garage door. "Medic!" I always get a kick out of ads with cats in them. Like the one where a cat sneezes and POOF! Cat hair flying all over the lace, or this one where a parrot scares the snot out of a cat by barking. There used to be an ad for a watch on TV, the watch had a cat on the face, and a mouse for the second hand. But the ad was adorable, lots of kittens just doing what kittens do. NOW, ON TOPIC: I don't currently own a cat, but we have many, many cats who live in our apartment complex. Seems they all think they own the place! < Our building does not have screens on the windows, so you never know exactly what to expect to come through them. During the summer months when I was leaving our sitting room windows open about 4-6" wide, there was one cat in particular who would hop up into that window opening, sit, stare and then meow at me. She finally became quite a "regular" at 3:00am! < Then she really got BOLD and would use the sitting room window to come in and the livingroom window on the other end of the house as her exit to cut from one side of the building to the other! After I caught her in the act, I started leaving some little "goodies" in a dish in my kitchen and a bowl of water. She soon figured out that what she was smelling was free for the taking and when she would be cutting through she would side-track to the kitchen to see if there were any munch on some munchies left out for her and be on her merry little way! Take care!
