Originally, Silvertip was Winchester's brand name for their hollow point rifle bullets with a silver colored tip to protect the point of the bullet during handling. They earned an enviable reputation for performance on game ranging from deer on up. I see now that Winchester (or one of its successors) is applying the same honored name to hollow point pistol cartridges as well. I've never tested the pistol rounds but I've never heard any negative comments about them either. As to the shotgun shells, the 3 inch shells carry more shot and powder. Originally they were intended for duck and goose shooting where ranges could be expected to be longer. Remember that a shotgun's effective range depends upon pattern density and, therefore, the more shot, the denser the pattern will be at a given range. Contrary to popular belief, 3 inch "Magnum" shotgun shells don't propel the shot any faster than 2&3/4 inch shells, they just throw more of it. They also kick harder because they're throwing more shot. Heck, I've got some 2&3/4 inch handloaded shotgun shells that come within an RCH of matching 3 inch factory shells. They'll rattle your teeth when fired. Regards. As of yet no one has ever renewed a Texas CCW, nor will they until 1998. The initial permit requires a thorough background check (criminal, medical, and some financial). A renewal ought to be simpler. In fact, since they are supposed to be keepping their files up to date, a renewal ought to be practically automatic. The alternative here is carrying a rifle or shotgun. Carrying of handguns other than with a permit and concealed (except of course on your own property) has been illegal for a hundred years. My .380 is loaded with Winchester SXT - the only brand of "premium" ammo they had in that caliber. Almost seems like limited-penetration ammo in a .380 would be redundant. ;-) I still have a "car gun" - a rifle or shotgun on the back seat. At the moment, it's a 12 gauge, though it's often a .44 Magnum model 94. My other "mouse gun" as I've seen it called is a .22 Beretta 21A, currently loaded with Winchester PowerPoint. TO> The fact that someone would even post such a sign is disturbing, and TO> unenforceable, unless there are metal detectors at the doors. It all TO> seems very silly to me. Take care. It's simple really. A store certainly shouldn't mind people whom they know that are armed - there is a certain presumed trust with people you know. There is not as much trust of strangers - are they potential customers exercising their right, or are they potential robbers? For many, the presumption seems to be the latter. I'd attribute that to ignorance - if you can't carry openly (which you can't in Texas), you don't know how much more common the former is. You never see honest people carrying concealed because it is concealed, you only see the criminal who wanders in with a concealed gun then whips it out and robs you. (And of course, as criminals try to pick times when the place is fairly empty, you don't know that the guy they waited until he'd left would have saved you.) Concealed carry is good for the person who has it, but it does nothing for PR. For instance, yesterday I mentioned to a shopkeeper I know that I had a license. He presumed I'd have left my gun in the car, but I told him "No, I have it on me." At first he was a little surprised, but as soon as he thought about it it made perfect sense. So at least he now trusts me. But I certainly wouldn't go up to a shopkeeper I didn't know and tell him, so he'll never know. (Of course, this was a small, family-owned business. Who ever honestly gets close to the checkout people in a big grocery or department store, unless you know them from someplace else?) Steve ...
