Then I tried to remove the BS> gas tube handguard, just a little chunk of wood, and spent about a BS> half hour frustrating myself. My SKS now has a nice new synthetic BS> stock, but retains the old nasty wooden handguard for the gas tube, BS> 'cause I couldn't figure the stupid thing out. BS> Anybody ever succesfully remove the wood from the gas tube, and BS> replace it with the synthetic piece? If so, _how_ ? :^) BS> Thanks in advance for any and all information--there's gotta be some BS> way to remove this little chunk of wood , short of using a chisel. Take the gas tube/piston assembly off, turn it on it's side, and you will see on that on the reciever end of the gas tube there is a pin that secures the steel endcap that holds the handguard in. Drive the pin out with a pin punch and remove the endcap. One end of the pin may be peened or machined down flush with the endcap. Drive it out from the other side, of course, if that is the case. Replace the wooden handguard with the synthetic one, replace the endcap, and drive the pin back in until it doesn't protrude on either side. It should be flush on both sides or the gas tube assembly won't fit properly. Since most of these rifles were packed in cosmoline for years before being sold, more than likely you will need to clean the gunk off of everything you can only get to with the handguard off while you're at it. I don't know how long you have had this rifle or how thoroughly you have cleaned it, but that stuff was packed through and through everything when the rifle was in storage. If you haven't already, remove the actuator rod and spring (the rod that runs under the rear sight assembly) and thoroughly clean and oil that too, being sure to clean all the cosmoline from the actuator rod bore. That has to be kept clean and free for an SKS's gas system to work properly. I have seen one so stuck from the cosmoline that it had to be tapped out! It is under spring pressure and should come flying out when you pull the gas tube/actuator rod release lever up past it. Of course, the piston should be clean and free in the gas tube as well. Both should be cleaned as part of your routine cleaning procedure. *---------------------------------------------------* | Josh Fisher | | Cincinnati, OH USA | | Internet: josh.fisher%2starnet@ivsoft.com | *---------------------------------------------------* *SignIt 1.6* Signed on 06-11-1996 ___ Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 [NR] --- Nexus v0.99.b07 [Node 1] * Origin: Star Net Development II *Proud Nexus Beta Site* (1:108/550) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 275 GUNS Ref: DAH00022 Date: 06/13/96 From: CARLOS MARTINEZ Time: 02:02am \/To: DAVE APPEL (Read 3 times) Subj: 12 ga slugs DA> The best non-saboted slugs, in my opinion, are DA> Rottweil/Brenneke DA> slugs.
