She is running because she is disgusted with the Republican currently holding the seat. She is disgusted because he voted to repeal the "Assault Weapons" ban. She has been very vocal in calling for more gun control, ever since the shooting. The womans name is Carol Maloney (sp?) and the media here has been giving her LOTS of free publicity. The incumbent is a freshman republican who is said to be very vulnerable. If she wins, she'll probably make Chuck the Schmuck seem like a reasonable moderate by comparison. And the media will turn her into the new poster child for gun control. Cool idea huh? Maybe. But politics is rarely pure and NEVER simple. Chuckie won't run unless he really thinks he can win. He may be a slimy bastard, but he's a fairly astute politician. His backstage maneuvering to save his safe seat during the last redistricting in 1990 was politically brilliant. His current Chief of Staff is the former CofS to the former State Assembly Speaker, with all kinds of good connections to upstate Democrats. He might win. It's entirely possible our current Governor will screw the pooch big time in the next campaign. If he DOES win, he's liable to use the Governorship to make a run at the Presidency in 2004 or 2008. Something I doubt he could do from Congress. Even if he losses, I doubt if we'll be rid of him. Most likely he'll go to work as a lobbyist for HCI and continue to make our lives miserable. I'm gonna spend the next couple of years trying to organize NY's gun owners to put enough pressure on the various Democratic County Chairs and Committees that they will deny him the nomination.
