Membership applications may be obtained from the secretary-treasurer. Background and activities: The Pyrotechnics Guild International was founded in 1969 by Max P. Vander Horck, then publisher of a monthly fireworks newsletter titled 'AMERICAN PYROTECHNIST.' Max envisioned the establishment of an organization for fireworks enthusiasts, whose goal would be not only to educate themselves regarding pyrotechnics, but the media, politicians and public as well. In March 1969 he announced to his subscribers that membership was available in a newly founded organization called the Pyrotechnics Guild International, and the PGI was born. The membership expanded for a few years and in 1974 a formal charter and by-laws were drawn up, officers elected, and formal incorporation accomplished (in Illinois), and the PGI became the PGI, Inc. Current membership stands at over 2,000. The "GREEN MAN" figure within the PGI emblem was selected from John Bate's 1635 fireworks treatise, 'THE SECOND BOOKE', to symbolize the long tradition of using fireworks as an essential part of festivals and celebrations - at that time led by so-called "GREEN MEN" appointed to head processions with a "FIRE CLUB" shooting sparks. They were called "GREEN MEN" because they clothed themselves with fresh leaves to protect themselves from sparks produced by their hand-held fireworks. Thus many PGI members refer to each other as "GREEN MEN" today. The PGI convention, held each year in early August, is the highlight PGI activity. Members of diverse backgrounds converge from all over to a preselected locality to spend a week discussing, viewing and shooting fireworks of every conceivable variety. The meetings feature lectures, seminars, demonstrations, film and videotape presentations by members. events include testing of retail class "C" fireworks, scheduled nightly competition featuring pyrotechnics assembled by the competitors, and a large fireworks display for the benefit of the local community as well as the convention attendees. The competition categories include ground pieces, aerial shells, rockets and special effects such as fountains, comets, candles, mines, etc. the competition categories have developed into a carefully scheduled and programmed exhibition of what talented pyrotechnic hobbyists can do when given the chance to fit their skills against those of other innovative members. Competition is held each night of the convention except for the last night which is devoted entirely to the public display. The display put on for the public is in itself a spectacular event since many of the effects can be seen nowhere else. Also during the public display a large assembled string of Firecrackers is lit. This string has been labeled "THE SUPERSTRING", and generates much excitement and anticipation since over a half a million firecrackers are consumed. The privilege of lighting the fuse is bid on by PGI members at an auction during the convention. Other events during the convention include business meetings, election of officers, a flea market, an auction. an awards banquet and class "C" sales to PGI members. Many unique pyrotechnic items are available at both the flea market and the auction. During the hectic convention tens of thousands of dollars worth of fireworks are consumed while attendees experience the additional reward of new friendships and camaraderie with fellow pyrobuffs. It is easy to understand why the PGI convention is the 'PYROTECHNIC ADVENTURE THAT REMAINS A LASTING MEMORY.' --- msged 2.07 * Origin: Home oftheBlack VAXCat;Merrimack,NH603-424-0923 (1:132/777@fidonet) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 274 PYROTECHNICS Ref: DCV00002 Date: 08/25/96 From: MARK BUDA Time: 10:49pm \/To: SCOTT HOFFMAN (Read 3 times) Subj: P.G.I.
