It will also let you use tcp/ip software without being connected to a network. Eg, I use it to read usenet news offline, with "changi" running on my machine as the news server. Just point the reader to the loopback address and it reads the news off the disk instead of going out on the internet for it. * KWQ/2 1.2i * Internet: John.Thompson@ibm.net --- Silver Xpress Mail System 5.4P1a * Origin: TeLnEt tO: applegate.com, a BBS oN tHE iNterNET (1:139/631) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 273 OS/2 INTERNET Ref: F3E00006 Date: 03/05/98 From: ALAN HESS Time: 05:42pm \/To: MARK LEWIS (Read 2 times) Subj: Vmodem Whilst masticating on , mark lewis (1:3634/12) wrote to Frank Sexton: ml> actually, it's 4 ports only... com1-com4... no numbers greater ml> than 4... before i got mine registered, i com1 for my ups, com2 ml> was a modem/bbs, com3 was modem/internet, and com4 was a virtual ml> port. when i registered, i went with the 8 port version and now ml> have 5 nodes of the bbs running on virtual ports with com1, com2, ml> and com3 running as described above ;-) I'm a registered user of the four-port version. I think I may have yet another problem here, because I did a search on all my hard drives and had no loopback.anything except for a few text files describing how to wire serial/parallel loopback plugs. I suspect not running a LAN here is the main problem - the required file(s) just didn't get installed. SM>> Thanks for the tip! I'll be on the lookout for a new SIO :-) It seems to work quite well here, for the Internet stuff, but my mailer pukes and as I (already mentioned), VMODEM won't start up. Be advised that SIO 2.0 is a *new* program! I think you can determine what that means for yourself! :^) Having used 1.x, and depended on it for so long, I have no problem with that, but would suggest that anyone who has used it for as long as I have register another copy to get a later serial number - I did last nite. If anyone is interested, I'll post the text that pertains to this from the beta readme file. -[Steve]- --- GoldED/2 3.00.Beta2+/#1057US3 * Origin: -[Steve's Place]- New Berlin, WI (FidoNet 1:154/731.2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 273 OS/2 INTERNET Ref: F3E00014 Date: 03/06/98 From: FRANK SEXTON Time: 05:46pm \/To: STEWART BUCKINGHAM (Read 2 times) Subj: Vmodem -=> /* Quoting Stewart Buckingham to Frank Sexton */ <=- -> -> For those that don't know how... it's done like this... -> -> rem Set the LOCAL LOOPBACK address -> -> ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 -> -> Everyone should do this. It depends, it depends, it depends and it depends. (grin). It depends on each specific app. I've personally only seen a problem with one app if it wasn't set. But many network gurus/programers are used to always having it set and sometimes don't realize that it's not on by default. -Frank (fsexton@ibm.net - http://www.concentric.net/~fsexton) --- Blue Wave/OS2 v2.30 * Origin: Wildcard BBS - Thornton, CO 1-303-252-0491 (1:104/725)
