Hi, Jim; -=> Quoting Roy J. Tellason to Jim Mcandrew <=- I responded to a post by you in the last couple of days, but some of my mail got lost (here, my boo-boo), and I'm not sure if that one got nuked or not, so I will reply again... :-{ I just got connected to FidoNet, so I missed the first part of this thread, but it sounds like you are using your own generator, (Gasoline powered or an inverter?) to suppliment the power grid, or some similar arrangement. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding you. (In this discussion, you can eplace "generator" with "inverter" - everything still applies). I will reply under the assumtion that my assumption is correct. JM> Instead, the bulb grew quite bright over a period of about JM> 1/2 second, culminating in a blown lightbulb and a $70 smoke JM> signal from the inverter. RJT> RJT> Ouch! What are you gonna do with that smoked inverter? (Trash man MIGHT give you $10 for it.) :-[ JM> What went wrong?: I forgot to consider what I should have JM> known! Hmmmm..., or maybe I JM> should have just watched a movie or read to the kids. Try this: Go down to your friendly hardware man and grab a couple of those cheap, (a buck or 2) neon test lights, then wire them across the poles of the switch used to connect your generator to the electrical system. (You DO use a switch, don't you???) These lights will light at about 65 volts, and can operate indefinately with as much as 300-400 volts applied, so you don't have to worry about burning them out, (though they will dim with age, and eventually stop working). Also, they draw insignifigant power. To use, crank up the generator with the connect switch OFF. When it gets up to speed, you will notice that the neon bulb, (bulbs if you are using a 240V generator), will begin blinking. When they are at their brightest, your generator is 180 degrees out of phase with the incoming power. Note the time that the lights stay OFF, and throw the switch "on" as close as possible to the middle of the time when the lights are off. This will minimize the jolt" of connecting the generator. Many older power power plants actually use (or used) light bulbs in this way to synchronize generators when switching them online. More modern power plants use an especially designed meter for the purpose. You could also use an AC voltmeter rated at at least 250 Volts. Be aware, though, that IF your situation is what I'm interpreting it is, that if your generator is running even slightly slow, (Free-running at under 60 Hz by even a fraction of a Hz), it will increase your load on the power grid, and your watthour meter will run faster. OTOH, if it free-wheels at even slightly faster than 60 Hz, it will actually feed power back into the grid, and if it is putting out more than you are using, your watthiur meter will actually run backwards! (The power Co. doesn't like this, but according to Federal law, they HAVE to pay - or credit - you for electricity you feed o them! (heh heh) Though if they know you are feeding them, they will probabaly want to install directinal KWH meters so they can tell how much you got from them and how much you fed them. The only time DC is better is when you can afford thick power cable to run from the generator to the batteries, and the batteries are close to the generator, and the power used from the batteries is converted to AC very close to the batteries, then sent out to be used.
