Also, former editor Nuala Buffini was so pleased with the Waro (from Devil Goblins From Neptune) that she asked Day and Topping to bring them back in a future novel, apparently titled Setting Suns: The Return Of The Waro. However, whether current editor Steve Cole is interested in the creatures' return is unknown, and Day and Topping have yet to even finish a plot outline for the novel, let alone seek a formal commission. * Eye Of Heaven was originally touted as an NA about three years ago (it was the first of a two-book set with Conjunction, which would have been written by Paul Leonard). * Dave Stone's second Benny Adventure, Oblivion, will see the return of Chris, Roz(!), Jason and several characters from Sky Pirates!. * Longest Day sees the Eighth Doctor and Sam encountering a new race of monsters called the Kusks and kicks off a loosely-linked story arc through subsequent Eighth Doctor novels. Amongst the developments of this arc is a radical redefinition of the character of Sam. * Catastrophea sees the return of the Draconians * Frobisher will indeed be the companion in David A McIntee's Sixth Doctor novel Mission: Impractical. After permission to include the shape-shifting Whifferdill (who habitually appeared as a penguin) was granted by both Steve Cole and Doctor Who Magazine editor Gary Gillatt, higher powers within the BBC threatened to block Frobisher's use, but this situation has now been resolved. Definitely appearing in Mission: Impractical are Sabalom Glitz and his partner, Dibber, as well as the Veltrochni, the Ogrons and a Tzun. * The Wirrrn and Foamasi return in Placebo Effect, as do Stacy Townsend and the Ice Warrior Ssard, the Eighth Doctor's companions in Russell's Radio Times comic strip. * Zeta Major is a sequel to Planet Of Evil. * The Scarlet Empress sees the return of Iris Wildthyme, a character from Paul Magrs' short story in Short Trips, in an Arabian Nights-type adventure. * Chris Boucher, scriptwriter of The Face Of Evil, The Robots Of Death and Image Of The Fendahl is the author of September's Last Man Running. * Matrix focuses around the Whitechapel murders. * The Infinity Doctors will celebrate Doctor Who's thirty-fifth anniversary and according to Lance Parkin is "a Paul McGann Missing Adventure with a twist." The story is set on Gallifrey, and features the return of unspecified "old faces", including one from a previous Parkin novel. * The Seventh Doctor Handbook does in fact cover both the Seventh and Eighth Doctors. Due to licensing arrangements (and an unwillingness to modify the cover design for the last volume of the series), however, the Eighth Doctor does not appear in any way on the front cover, though he is mentioned on the back. * Plans to have Sam Jones appear on the cover of a BBC novel have reportedly been shelved when, after several attempts to include her on front and back covers, Steve Cole finally decided she didn't look right. Her image may still be used in promotional materials, however. * Paul Cornell had hoped to feature Bernice Summerfield in a BBC Books novel, but this idea has been nixed by higher powers within the BBC. * Much like 1997, there will be no December 1998 releases from BBC Books * Wages Of Sin is a historical set in during the last days of Rasputin, and was originally written for the First Doctor. * Amongst the Eighth Doctor novels slated to appear in 1999 are Autumn Mist by David A McIntee, set around Bastogne in December 1944 and described by McIntee as "sort of Kelly's Heroes meets The X-Files, and Revolution Man by Paul Leonard, which takes place in the 1960s and is about "flower power, drugs, telekinesis and for a change no aliens". * Philip Segal and Gary Russell will team up to pen the long-anticipated Doctor Who: Regeneration, a hardcover which will painstakingly detail the making of the 1996 TV movie. BBC Books Unveils New Companion (May 22nd, 1998) 1999 sees the addition of a third member to the TARDIS crew. Joining the Eighth Doctor and Sam Jones is Fitz Kreiner, a 27 year-old from 1963 Earth. (Kreiner is pronounced KRY-ner; originally it was to be spelt Kriener until it was pointed out that the pronounciation would then be KREE-ner.) The son of a German fugitive from the Nazis, the resulting ostracisation Fitz felt while growing up in Windsor has left him solitary and cynical, the type of person who does not suffer fools gladly. Fitz is a musician and something of an actor, apt to play "roles" as they suit him. Disillusioned with a world he believes is flawed, Fitz sees travelling with the Doctor as a way of discovering better opportunities denied him on Earth in the 1960s. In his original biography sketch, editor Steve Cole describes Fitz as "combining Vila from Blake's 7 with Gerald Harper from Adam Adamant Lives! with a measure of Robert Carlyle thrown in for good measure!" Fitz joins the TARDIS crew in Mike Collier's The Taint in January. Perhaps unusually, Fitz was created for BBC Books by Rebecca Levene, who edited the Virgin line of Doctor Who novels for several years. BBC Books Hit North America (Apr. 26th, 1998) After months of waiting, fans in Canada and the United States have joined their counterparts in the rest of the world in receiving regular shipments of the new BBC Doctor Who novels. After lengthy negotiations, BBC Books has reached distrubtion agreements with London Bridge (in the US) and General Distributors (in Canada) which will see novels become available between one and two months behind the UK release dates, on par with Australia and New Zealand (who have had distribution deals in place for several months). And, contrary to previous reports, it appears that at least some bokstores are in fact putting all the BBC novels back to the original June 1997 releases on their shelves, as opposed to just the most recent ones. Changes In Store For New Adventures (Apr. 26th, 1998) After a year which has seen the line survive the loss of its link to the TV series from which it was born, Virgin's New Adventures will undergo significant modifications to ensure its stability for the foreseeable future. For creative (rather than financial) reasons, the NAs will be switching to a bimonthly release schedule beginning with June's The Sword Of Forever. And, beginning in August is a trilogy of novels, culminating in the pivotal Where Angels Fear, co-written by former series editor Rebecca Levene and new editor Simon Winstone. The covers will also be redesigned, losing the "New Adventures" logo from the front (but maintaining the "NA" logo on the spine), in the hope that the series will become more marketable amongst general science-fiction readers in North America. ___ Blue Wave/386 v2.30 --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Get Your Fido Fix Here. telnet://bbs.docsplace.org (1:3603/140) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 270 DR WHO/BRIT SCIF Ref: FA300021Date: 05/25/98 From: ARTIMUS BROWN Time: 06:58pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Who News - 3 Doctor Who In General Forthcoming Merchandise Schedule (May 9th, 1998) MARCH Battlefield (PAL video, UK; NTSC video, North America) The War Machines (NTSC video, North America) The Awakening/Frontios (PAL video, Australia; NTSC video, North America) Timelash (NTSC video, North America) The Happiness Patrol (NTSC video, North America) Short Trips (audio) APRIL Terror Of The Zygons (PAL laser disc, UK) MAY The Mind Of Evil (PAL video, UK) Lust In Space (PAL video, UK) The Happiness Patrol (PAL video, Australia) JULY The Horror Of Fang Rock (PAL video, UK) The E-Space Trilogy (PAL video, Australia) AUGUST Spearhead From Space (PAL laser disc, UK) SEPTEMBER Planet Of Fire (PAL video, UK) Timelash (PAL video, Australia) OCTOBER The Ark (PAL video, UK) NOVEMBER The Ice Warriors (PAL video, UK) Battlefield (PAL video, Australia) The Ark (NTSC video, North America) The Ice Warriors (NTSC video, North America) The Mind Of Evil (NTSC video, North America) Horror Of Fang Rock (NTSC video, North America) K-9 and Company (NTSC video, North America) Planet Of Fire (NTSC video, North America) JANUARY Nightmare Of Eden (PAL video, UK) Revenge Of The Cybermen/Terror Of The Zygons (PAL video, UK) Forthcoming Merchandise Notes (Apr. 26th, 1998) * Battlefield is extended with previously unseen material. * Also being rereleased in March in the US are Pyramids Of Mars, The Talons Of Weng-Chiang, The Stones Of Blood and City Of Death, at a reduced price and under the global label of The Gateway Collection. These are otherwise the same as the previous US releases (ie Pyramids is still the edited omnibus edition as opposed to the episodic version more recently released in the UK). * The Short Trips audio features stories from the short story collection (published simultaneously) read by Sophie Aldred and Nicholas Courtney. Amongst the stories read by Courtney is a bonus tale written by David A McIntee not included in the book version. Short Trips 2 will receive a similar treatment; with the book having been pushed back to February, presumably the audio release (originally slater for October) will also be delayed, though this has not been confirmed. * The release of The Mind Of Evil is in black and white, but includes five minutes of footage recolorised from the extant color American clip, added at the end of the tape. * A recent report suggested the 1996 FOX telefilm would be released on video in May, but this was denied by a Universal spokesperson. However, the MCA/Universal Video website does list a two-hour Doctor Who movie in their catalogue, but includes no other information, so it is impossible to confirm whether or not this is in reference to the telefilm, and if so, when it will be released. * Reeltime Pictures' Lust In Space sees Doctor Who put on trial as a sexist programme; the video stars Nicholas Courtney as the judge, Mark Strickson as the prosecutor, James Bree as the attroney for the defense, and Anneke Wills, Katy Manning, Louise Jameson, Sarah Sutton and Sophie Aldred as witnesses. * Briefly on the schedule was an audio collection of four Fourth Doctor stories narrated by Tom Baker (including three new stories plus a fourth drawn from Short Trips). However, this project has now been suspended, apparently as a result of conflicts with Baker. * The Ark is a special release designed to ensure each of the first seven Doctors is represented on video in the rporgamme's thirty-fifth anniversary year. * In November 1998, The Ice Warriors will be released as a two-tape pack. The missing episodes two and three will be replaced by short bridges making use of soundbites, narration, photos, telesnaps and graphics. The tape will be dovetailed by a 25-minute-long documentary on the junking of Sixties and Seventies episodes and the search now underway across the globe. This will also feature virtually every existing clip from incomplete episodes which could possibly be incorporated, including the full six minutes extant from Galaxy 4: 3. A bonus episode at the end of the tape is now also currently planned (The Underwater Menace: 3 is the likely candidate), and a special collectors' edition incorporating an audio CD of the two missing episodes is also under consideration. Exact plans for the Ice Warriors release have yet to be firmed up, however. * A further (as yet unspecified) audio release is scheduled for November. * The double pack release of Revenge Of The Cybermen and Terror Of The Zygons will mark with first time these stories will be available on video in their unedited, episodic form. Doctor Who Comes To DVD (Apr. 26th, 1998) The requests of numerous fans will be answered in late 1998 or early 1999, as BBC Worldwide is planning a test release of one or two Doctor Who titles on DVD. The sales of these releases will determine whether the project will continue. Amongst the titles under consideration for the first wave of releases is The Five Doctors Special Edition. Link: Quences' Doctor Who Merchandise Release Schedule Link: Encore Entertainment Laser Disc Release Schedule DWM Introduces Ninth Doctor (May 12th, 1998) In a move which may set Doctor Who Magazine's own Doctor Who continuity still further at odds with that of the novels, DWM #265 (published May 1998) sees the Eighth Doctor regenerating into his ninth incarnation at the conclusion of The Final Chapter. The new Doctor is visually based upon Nick Briggs, who previously appeared as the Doctor with companion Ria in DWM #173 (Party Animals, alongside the Seventh Doctor) and who has portrayed the Time Lord in the Audio Visuals series of fan-made audio adventures. There has been no indication of whether or not this is a permanent change. DWM previously split with New Adventures continuing by killing off Ace, despite having closely paralled the novels in the mid-Nineties. Obituaries: Jewell, Bevan, Elson (May 15th, 1998) The May 11th edition of Australia's Daily Mail reports that Robert Jewell has passed away in that country. He was 78. Jewell was inside the Dalek casing for their debut story in 1964, and returned to the role several times thereafter. Also recently departed are two of the most prominent Doctor Who artists. Phil Bevan's illustrations graced numerous publications, including Doctor Who Magazine and In-Vision. Bevan died in early April. Meanwhile, Peter Elson was the cover artist for numerous novels in Virgin's New Adventures series, beginning with Time's Crucible in 1992.
