At the first look Delphi seems to be the pascal version of Visual Basic, but it's much more than that. I don't think Delphi to be more dificult than VB, and it would be easy to learn Delphi if you already programm in VB. I told you Delphi is more than a simple pascal VB version, as Delphi is the most powerful tool to create Windows programms today. Pascal language implemented in Delphi is more powerfull than the Basic wich VB uses. You may also create our own components without using anything but Delphi. There are more improovements but you'll discover it while you learn. I am trying to write a small program that will use an ASCII file as its data. But the file will be called different things and be in different places for different users. In Clipper I used an INI file that would contain the users defintions for this data file, and I would like to do something similar with D3 can anyone give me a clue as to where I would start? The INI file might have something like... [DATA] G:\COMMS\DATA\ADDRESS.DAT So I would (in Clipper) read in that INI file and assign "ADDRESS.DAT" to a variable that I could use throughout my program. I don't know if I will ever tackle this project or not, but it is something of interest and wanted to get some feedback. There have been several emulator programs written that allow the PC to run old computer software (i.e. Apple, TRS-80, C64, etc.) I started on the old Tandy Color Computer. Emulators must be very effiecient and tend to take alot of power to emulate a system at it's original speed since the software must emulate the original processor, the system hardware and be capable of running the system ROM and OS on this emulated system. I know that some of the good emulators are written in Assembler. Also, alot of these are DOS based. Any idea if Delphi 3 would be up to the task (I tend to think it would)? I was thinking that using Delphi 3 and DirectX would allow some nice windows based emulators to be written. Anyone knowledgable of emulator design or DirectX have comments on this? I think it would quite a learning exercise to write an emulator. You'll have to work with the commands for a while, because the manuals and help files are not very helpful. I have seen it suggested elsewhere that you could try to override the memo object's onpaint method, though I have not tried it and don't know if it would work. You might also look for an alternative tmemo type on the Internet; I think there are some for sale; if you don't want to use TRichEdit. --- InterEcho 1.19 * Origin: PC-Ohio * Cleveland, OH * 216-381-3320 (1:157/200) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 269 DELPHI Ref: F1400001 Date: 01/02/98 From: YVES VAN HAL Time: 02:48pm \/To: GARY WEINFURTHER (Read 0 times) Subj: Using VBX under (Delphi > 1.0) ? I am aware of that, but I have bought the Visual Solutions Pack which is supported in Delphi 1.0 and uses VBX controls. I do not intend to buy it again (if it exists), but I would rather use it under "Delphi > 1.0". Hence my question if it is possible to encapsulate them.
