That sounds about right then. I can't remember if my Supra 14.4 clicked or not. >How would one go about locating the device? It's (usually) in the back of the modem. Will be a largish, rectangular device; often in a colour other than black (to distinguish it from the rest of the IC chips). Will also be taller than any of the other chips. On the bottom where it attaches to the board it usually has just six pins (two for the coil that powers it, the other four for the phone wires). I just looked at a couple of old modems while typing this: I couldn't FIND the thing on two of them, and it was a black, coffin-shaped article on the third. A fourth modem had THREE such coffin-shaped relays, all lined up next to one another. Having just disassembled my (now out-of-warranty) Supra 14.4, I find the relay on the left-rear of the circuit board, as the modem faces you. It too, is a large, black, somewhat coffin-shaped article, with 8 widely-spaced pins. Let's see if THAT helps you any. :) --- SLMAIL v4.5a (#0384) * Origin: Paul's Waka Waka BBS [206] 783-7979 Seattle, Wa. At 8:06 AM on 13 Sep 97, Scott Kiddy said to Htom Trites: -> -> I wore out the Supra 2400, eventually, on another computer; we had -> -> only pulse dialing in our neighborhood, and the relay finally gave -> -> out. I've always wondered if it would be at all possible to -> SK> wear out a modem, as in theory they should last forever... -> The relay that "picks up" the phone line. I'm actually assuming that -> that is what has happened to it; if you plug an active phone line -> into it, the speaker on the modem emits the dial tone, and while it -> thinks it's dialing, it doesn't. We didn't have tone service then, -> at all, so I didn't even try. I'll have to dig it out and see what -> happens; it won't be able to hang up, is my guess. SK> Wait, if you get a dialtone, it's picking up the phone, right? Not really; it already has the phone off-hook when the line is plugged into the modem. And it doesn't put it on-hook when given the hangup command, so you'd have to unplug it to put the phone "on-hook". My SupraFax 14.4 has recently started to unexpectedly reset itself, isplaying all of the LEDs lit for a few seconds, then (usually) either the top or middle row lit, and then "OK". Sometimes both top and middle rows are lit, and sometimes it needs to be powercycled to reset. I was wondering if there was something being sent throught the serial port that was causing this, but it's been disconnected from the serial port, and I just saw it do it again, so that's not it. Something on the phone line, or is it just finally losing it from old age? I've put it back "on its feet", but that hasn't helped and probably didn't cause the problem, either. I noticed that there are a series of jumpers which are labeled as follows Ser 0 Ser 1 Irq 2 Irq 3 Irq 4 Irq 5 Modem works on Comm 3 under the following configuration.... Ser 0 disabled Ser 1 enabled IRQ 4 enabled However, because my mouse is on Comm 1 and is using IRQ 4, I am trying to ind out how I can get the modem to work on IRQ 3, Comm 2. So far, I have not found the correct configuration. Also, because this is a PC which I have ust acquired, and have not yet seen Comm 2 working, I am not positive that Comm 2 is in fact a working port. Although MSD and Windows show Comm 1, 2, and 3 as all set up to work. Once I get the correct configuration, would it be possible for me to use the Comm 3 port because I know that it works? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) --- Renegade v5-11 Exp * Origin: The DarkSide BBS *E.R.
