For Educators: * The elimination of fear is an important responsibility of the administrator. Fear can take many forms, fear of making a mistake, fear of change, fear of losing one's job, fear of lack of knowledge, and fear of doing things a new way. Leaders must create an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, a place of security where risks can be taken and where learning never ceases. *Where there is fear, important information and opinions will be withheld or distorted, communication will be inhibited, rumors and negative attributions will abound, relationships will be adversarial, and distrust will be pervasive. Leaders must eliminate fear in order to lead." People in research, design, sales, and production must work as a team, to foresee problems of production and in use that may be encountered with the product or service. For Educators: * Schools, departments, grades, staff, teachers, administrators, and members of the board of education must work as a team. They are all on the same side, working together in a common system for a common and noble purpose. * When parts of the system are at war with each other, what suffers is the output of the system and the quality of educational services provided to the community and its students. * Teamwork should extend to the community, its other educational resources, the business sector, social services, government agencies, churches, etc. 'It takes a whole village to raise a child.'" Such exhortations only create adversarial relationships, as the bulk of the causes of low quality and low productivity belong to the system and thus lie beyond the power of the work force. For Educators: * The key concept that Dr. Deming teaches is that most causes for poor quality and low productivity are attributable to the system. A negligible amount of problems is attributable to individuals. * If every individual teacher, student, administrator, and school board member did his or her best, without improvements in the systems, processes, and methods, the increase in quality and productivity would be minuscule. Asking students to improve their knowledge and skill is a aste of time unless the system is changed to allow that to happen. Asking teachers to prepare better and work harder--without improving the system--is equally useless." My point exactly - we need a a yardstick at every CB> grade level to ensure that children do not progress until they have CB> mastered the work at that level. How about doing away with "grade levels" and have every teacher in elementary responsible for an age range, (called vertical grouping elsewhere). This is being tried in our district and the teachers in the program really like it. I team taught with a teacher that moved up with her class, 4th to 5th. I saw mostly advantages to what went on in her class. There are other approaches to this problem than using the systems we have now. How about a K-2 class--the teacher keeps the same students for three years? Could this be done at higher levels? Sure it could. --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: VETLink #13 Las Cruces NM (505)523-2811 (1:305/105) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 265 EDUCATOR Ref: DG500009 Date: 12/04/96 From: CARL BOGARDUS Time: 11:11pm \/To: MILES MAXTED (Read 2 times) Subj: Spelling By Routman MM> So, please could I ask for more detail ? I doubt it would work out as students moved on to higher age levels. It may work out through age 7-8 because the kids haven't been in school long enough for the difference between the brightest kids and the slowest kids in that class to manifest themselves, but by age 10 some kids would be reading at 5th-grade-level+ and others barely at the second grade levels. And by age 10, the difference in math skills among those kids could be enormous. --- Simplex BBS (v1.07.00Beta [DOS]) * Origin: NighthawkBBS, Burlington NC 910-228-7002 HST Dual (1:3644/6) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 265 EDUCATOR Ref: DGC00001 Date: 12/04/96 From: RON MCDERMOTT Time: 07:11am \/To: PAUL KOUKOS (Read 2 times) Subj: RE: FAILING UP TO 14% -> Most teachers in elementary school have virtually zero time -> available during the school day to do anything beyond what -> they already do; this despite having to handle "only" a -> group of 20+ students...
