I've yet to find out exactly what's causing it, but Office has been a common factor on all systems I've seen where this has happened. Anyway, I usually just rebuild the registry, and although there's a very real risk that some registry information may be permanently lost, I haven't yet encountered a system where this method hasn't worked: 0) Boot to DOS (press F8 at bootup and select 'command line') 1) Go to the Windows directory ("CD WINDOWS" or whatever the Windows directory is called) 2) Type "REGEDIT /E C:\REGISTRY.TXT" to export all valid keys in the registry to a text file. 3) Type "ATTRIB -S -H -R *.DAT" to make the registry files visible. 4) Rename the old files, just in case ("REN SYSTEM.DAT SYSTEM.BAK" and "REN USER.DAT USER.BAK") 5) Rebuild the registry from the text file created in step 2 with "REGEDIT /L:SYSTEM.DAT /R:USER.DAT /C C:\REGISTRY.TXT" 6) Reboot DH> Why would this be doing this now after no problems using Win95 for about DH> a year? Why indeed. Something is causing the registry to become corrupt, but nobody seems to know what it is. BW> How is SWBell using Netscape instead of IE w/WIN95 if MS FORCES IE on BW> dealers. IE can be disabled just by clicking [yes] to "Do you want to use BW> Netscape as your default browser". The IE4/Win98 debate is NT4/IIS all over again. It goes like this: 0) MS makes the OS (NT4 or Win98). 1) Other companies make software for this OS. 2) MS has a product that competes directly with this software. 3) MS suddenly decides that this piece of software is no longer a separate product, but rather a part of the OS. They decide to bundle it with the OS 'for free'. Now, everybody must realize that MS has invested real money in the development of products like IIS and MSIE. When they say they are 'giving them away for free', one should remember that to use MSIE or IIS, one has to own /another/ MS product; the OS. That is not 'giving away', it's cross-subsidising. With NT/IIS it was so much more visible. NTWS4 doesn't have IIS, but the license prevents users from using 3rd party web server software. For that, you'll have to get NTS, which cost a /lot/ more (although the kernel is absolutely identical) -- and which just happens to have IIS included as a 'freebie'. The point is: When MS tries to recoup their IE development costs through OS sales, they're using their near-monopoly position to gain market shares. The methods they are using have nothing to do with free competition and everything to do with rule-bending and illegal cross- subsidising. MSIE is a separate product (it is certainly treated that way by the MS developement team), and should carry its own price tag. BW> Just as Bill said, it's like CocaCola having to include Pepsi in all it's BW> cartons. Would you include a competitors product in with your product? I BW> really don't think you would. No, but let's use the Coca Cola analogy to illustrate the situation: The market leader is 'MicroCola' from MicroFoods. It is sold through various stores throughout the country, including the 'MicroBurger' chain, owned by MicroFoods. However, there are lots of other burger chains offering 'MicroCola' with their products. MicroFoods then decides that from now on, 'MicroCola' and 'MicroBurger' will be sold as a single product, 'MicroMeal'. You can no longer buy a 'MicroCola' without a 'MicroBurger', and the new product will be slightly more expensive than 'MicroCola' was on its own. The other burger chains are furious. The chairman at MicroFoods, Gilliam Bates, doesn't understand what the fuss is all about. "After all", he says, "there's nothing stopping the customers from throwing away the MicroBurger and buy another burger instead." "Besides", Mr. Bates points out, "the other burger chains are free to sell another soft drink with /their/ burgers, like 'Dr. Crapper' or 'Sour Cola'".
