I have been running win98 since the early builds, and even the early builds beat OSR2 in stability. RC5 is the fastest build, and most stable i have seen from a microsoft product. The last crash i had was with build 1602, and that was from using a then buggy NU 3.0. The computer doesnt lockup, doesnt crash, and is faster than OSR2 is. I have it on these computers: AMD K6-233 MMX - 64 Megs Ram - 8.4 GB Drive AMD K5-100 - 32 Megs Ram - 6.4 GB Drive Cyrix 6x86/200 - 64 Megs - 6.4 GB 486/66 DX2 32 Megs Ram, 650 Meg drive. The only way you can have one single partition is to use FAT-32. However, you must have Win95B or later to use FAT-32. I SB>seem to find it in my archives :) Using Windows 95's Secret Multi-configuration powers by Alan Zisman (c) 1998 azisman@rogers.wave.ca 655 words One of Windows 95 secrets is that you can choose to load different sets of DOS drivers and configurations at boot time. This can be useful if a number of situations. For example, you may want to sometimes boot to DOS, loading DOS drivers for CD, mouse, sound, etc. Or you might want to boot straight through to Win95, and not bother with the overhead of those drivers. You might want different DOS configurations for different programs-sometimes loading EMS for the odd program that still needs that archaic memory configuration, while avoiding it (and thereby freeing up 64 kb of upper memory blocks) other times. Win 95 lets you this by continuing support for a feature included in MS DOS 6, support for multiple configurations. This was more or less documented in DOS 6, including a few pages in the (rarely read) manual, and mention in the DOS Help program. Win95 included support for this feature, but never bothered to mention it, not even in the encyclopedic Resource Kit. In order to use it, you'll need to edit your Config.sys file (and possibly Autoexec.bat as well). Some Win95 users may not have these files-feel free to create them, using a text editor like Windows Notepad or DOS Edit, and saving in C:\. Since we want to have configurations that boot to the command prompt, we might first want to edit the text-mode MSDOS.SYS system file, so your computer will boot to DOS by default. To do this, first remove the Hidden, System, and Read-only attributes from that file. Open it in a text editor, and add a line reading: BootGui=0 in the file's [Options] section. Save, and restore the various attributes. Now your system will boot to a DOS prompt. Typing 'Win' (or including it in a multi-configuration section) will load Windows 95. Here's an example, with explanations for each section. Config.sys [menu] MenuItem=Dos, Boot to DOS MenuItem=EMS, Boot to DOS with EMS support MenuItem=Zip, Boot to DOS and load Zipdrive support MenuItem=Win, Boot to Windows 95 MenuColor=15,1 MenuDefault=4,10 (This section defines the menu items, giving each a name (which must be a single word), followed by what will appear onscreen. This menu will be displayed in bright white text (15) on a blue background (1), and will default to item #4 (Win), waiting 10 seconds for user input). [Common] Device=C:\Windows\Himem.sys DOS=High,UMB (Items in a [Common] section are run regardless of the menu item selected. You can have multiple [Common] sections, and should always end your Config.sys with a [Common] section-even an empty one). [Dos] Device=C:\Windows\EMM386.exe noems DEVICEHIGH=TEAC_CDI.SYS /D:MSCD001 [EMS] Device=C:\Windows\EMM386.exe ram DEVICEHIGH=TEAC_CDI.SYS /D:MSCD001 [Zip] Include=Dos [Win] Device=C:\Windows\EMM386.exe noems (Here are the contents of the three configuration blocks defined in the [menu] section. Blocks can include multiple lines. Note the Include command in the [Zip] section, which can be used to include all the commands from a different block). [Common] (This file ends with an empty [Common] block-that way, if an installation program adds something to the end of Config.sys, it will affect every bootup, regardless of menu choice.) As well, your choice from the Config.sys menu can be used to produce a variety of options in Autoexec.bat (This feature was not present in MSDOS 6.0, but was added in version 6.20). It works like this: Autoexec.bat @echo off (insert any commands needed for all configurations) path=c:\;c:\windows\command;c:\util Set temp=C:\Temp goto %config% :Dos (insert commands for this configuration) C:\Windows\Command\Smartdrv goto End :EMS (insert commands for this configuration) C:\Windows\Command\Smartdrv goto End :Zip (insert commands for this configuration) C:\Windows\Command\Smartdrv LH C:\Util\Zip\Guest goto End :Win (insert commands for this configuration) Win goto End :End (Note the 'Win' command to start Windows 95 is the :Win section. The Goto End commands makes your computer skip over the remain lines until it gets to the :End tag. As well, if a program installation adds a line at the end of Autoexec.bat, it will run in all configurations). _______________ Internet mail to: azisman@rogers.wave.ca Win95 FAQ at: http://home.bc.rogers.wave.ca/azisman/faq95.htm ___ * WR 1.31 # 126 * --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Basic'ly Computers: Mooo-ing Right Along.
