Your 4.5 gig drive would end up with 3 partitions, the last one (if you use max for the first 2) would be about 300 megs, just right for the swapfile. --- Platinum Xpress/386/Wildcat! v1.3e * Origin: FidoNet International Coordinator Emeritus, for life. OK, if you have properly rebuilt the CMOS data for the new flashBIOS, then the highest probability is the new flashBIOS has altered the default DRAM timing (to give more speed), and your existing SIMMs don't like the change. Things to try: 1. Download the IOSFIX.EXE patch from the IBM website. Install as per instructions. This patch specifically fixes problems with Windows Protection Errors on some machines. Note: The IOSFIX.EXE patch is normally applied along with the following patches, in the following order: 1. IOSUPD.EXE - W95/W95A only, already in W95B 2. DSKTSUPD.EXE - W95/W95A only, already in W95B 3. IOSFIX.EXE - All versions of W95 4. DSKTSUPD.EXE - All versions of W95 All patches except the IOSFIX.EXE patch can be found on the Microsoft website/ftpsite. 2. Remove, clean and reseat your SIMMs. Your problem with the memory may have decided to show up around the same time you updated the CMOS, and what you really have here is a problem completely unrelated to the CMOS update. 3. Check the waitstate values for your SRAM cache and your DRAM. Increase these values and see if this solves your problem. 4. Remove, clean and reseat all the cards installed in your machine. 5. Remove and reseat all the cables connecting your devices. Comment: Normally, windows protection errors are the result of hardware problems. However, there is one specific problem normally related to soundcards which is fixed by the IOSFIX.EXE update mentioned above, along with updates to the sound card drivers themselves. Please make sure you are using the latest soundcard, mouse and video drivers for your machine. Best I can do for now. Check with your trackball manufacturer for possible updates. Please note that there is nothing about having a "new" device which means the drivers supplied in the box work properly. Brand new stuff can have buggy drivers. Always check for updates, even on new hardware, simply as a matter of course. No, there is nothing special between the PS2 port and serial or bus ports for the mouse/trackball which could cause the problem you mention. In my experience, every instance of the problem you mention has eventually been fixed by mouse or video driver updates, or both. Best I can do for now. Move all your *.cpl files from the System folder into an unrelated folder (I make a folder called "stuff" off the System folder for these kind of tests. 2. Open Control Panel. You should get an empty box. Close Control Panel. Does it close correctly? If so, one of your CPLs is causing the lockup. 3. Bump CPLs from the stuff folder back into the System folder, one at a time, until you find the one which makes your system break. Once you know where the problem lies, remove that app, manually check to ensure that ALL the files installed by that app (with the exception of shared DLLs) have been properly deleted from your system, and reinstall. Hope this helps. Best I can do for now. Hi, Torbjorn. As per the dialog boxes which appear during the update, the file changes are not actually applied until a reboot is performed. General Rule: Always reboot after a patch is applied, even if MS says it's not necessary. Many patches will not update the file in memory until you reboot, even if the file itself can be updated on the hard disk while W95 is operating. Some files (especially static VXDs, which are anything that end in *.386) cannot be updated at all while W95 is running. All updates of this type MUST have a reboot to apply the changes. Once you have rebooted, recheck the VNBT.386 file Version using Windows Explorer. You should now find the 4.00.1658 version is properly installed. Best I can do for now. If you have not *specifically* installed the Intel busmastering drivers, you are probably running an earlier version of the MS disk drivers, which does not properly support multiple ATAPI devices. You can check what Hard Disk driver is in use on your machine by going into the IOSUBSYS folder off the System folder and checking for ESDI_506.PDR. There should be no other PDR files which reference the Hard Disk. If ESDI_506.PDR is the only disk-driver you find, then you are running the standard MS disk drivers. If you find other PDR files in that folder which reference the Hard Disk, then they must be uninstalled and you must revert to the standard MS drivers. Normal "bog stock" PDR driver list in IOSUBSYS is as follows: 8-25-97 11:16a 24,426 ESDI_506.PDR 7-11-95 9:50a 18,998 HSFLOP.PDR 3-10-97 11:12a 13,290 RMM.PDR 7-11-95 9:50a 23,133 SCSIPORT.PDR Dates and times may vary with the version of W95/W95A/W95B installed, along with the presence/absence of the IOSFIX and/or REMIDEUP updates. The "Intel xxxxxx" is normal. The number indicates the actual version of the IDE controller chip on your motherboard. Best I can do for now.
