(Otherwise, how could it tell if you connected/disconnected something in between shutting down the machine and restarting?) Note: W98 has a new procedure for hardware discovery. W98 relies on the PnP manager much more extensively than W95 to detect changes in the system configuration at bootup -- as well as using W9x's dynamic vxd load/unload process to connect hardware to W95 in the background once the system has loaded. While the above new feature in W95 speeds up the boot process for people with modern motherboard BIOS, this could require people with older motherboard BIOS to manually remove references to some items in the Registry that W95 may not be able to handle automatically. We shall see. Hopefully the same will happen for you. The problem with intermittent "coming ready" in CD-ROM drives is usually associated with dust in the Track0 optical sensor. Clean the dust bunnies out of the slot between the LED and the phototransistor and make sure there's no residual junk on the interruptor tab on the carriage. BTW, it is also possible there's just plain "something wrong" with that drive. Can you bump it into a different machine temporarily to see if it works properly there? Best I can do for now. When your motherboard probes the system at bootup and finds the EDO in Bank0 and the FPM in Bank1, it probably uses a set of worst-case waitstate settings appropriate for "wrong" installation. When you put the FPM in Bank0 and the EDO in Bank1, the system sees that whatever it finds out about the FPM, the EDO can do better, so it uses the fastest settings your FPM can work with, which the EDO handles happily as well. You're probably running with at least a 1-waitstate faster configuration of the memory subsystem using the FPM0/EDO1 bank-arrangement. That's how "exclusive-mode" works. Normally, the *.w40 files will vanish again into thin air once the system is restarted in W95 mode. However, I have seen situations where W95 gets "confused" and those files remain behind when they should not. In those situations, I recommend the *.w40 files be moved to an unrelated folder and W95 should then be checked for correct operation moving to and from exclusive mode. Note: One correction here a) "Exclusive mode" writes the *.WOS files. b) "Previous Version of DOS" mode writes the *.W40 files. The mechanism is similar in each case, but the "Previous version of DOS" mode also renames IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM as well as CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. Best I can do for now.
