What would be the advantage of doing this manually? Hi, Bryan. The advantage of loading stuff manually in Config.sys versus allowing the autoload is that the autoload can only fill UMB from the bottom up, in the order in which IO.SYS processes autoload-items. Consequently, if your UMB would be more efficiently filled with a specific load-order (which is Memmaker's job to check), then the only way to ensure you are getting that optimal load-order is to manually add the autoload-items to Config.Sys and run Memmaker. Note: W95 checks for the presence of the autoload-items in Config.Sys and/or Autoexec.Bat. If an autoload-item is found, then the specific configuration methodology found on the Config.Sys/Autoexec.Bat command line for that particular autoload-item is followed, and the actual autoload-process for that item is ignored. Yes, the above customization is the reason you can use extended characters in your filenames. The 850 Code Page is used when "Canada" is selected as the "Country of Origin" during the Windows 95 install process. The 437 Code Page is used when "United States" is selected as the "Country of Origin" during the Windows 95 install process. The 437 Code Page is American English. The 850 Code Page includes support for both American English and Canadian French. Consequently, the use of the 850 Code Page gives you permission to use the extended character set for filenames, as this is a necessary requirement to save Canadian French words in filenames. Users of Outlook98 who attempt to go to the site are receiving various error messages -- which indicate the site is partially functional but the scripts to feed users the appropriate updates are not yet fully debugged. I am told that the Outlook98 Live-Update site will be functional within the next 5 days -- but we all know about Microsoft's track-record when it comes to delivery dates, so I'll expect it when I see it. CF>My system appears to function properly with the non-working PCI Bridge. Hi, Charles. While your system will run without the correct PCI Bridge, you will have poor performance until this is corrected, as a correctly functioning PCI Bridge is a requirement for a correctly-functioning EIDE Controller Chipset, which is a requirement for 32-bit Disk Access, which is a requirement for W95 "go fast"... The driver updates you need should have been shipped on either a diskette or a CD-ROM which came with your motherboard. If you don't have this, contact your motherboard supplier and arrange to obtain the necessary drivers. Note: In many cases, the drivers can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website/ftpsite/BBS -- and these are often newer versions than those found on the diskette or CD. It is always a good idea to check regularly for updates from your motherboard manufacturer in regards to flashBIOS and motherboard drivers. The downloadable drivers will probably come in an archive. The archive will contain installation instructions. The manufacturer's webpage usually has instructions on how to perform flashBIOS updates. This varies according to the make and model of motherboard, so be sure the instructions you follow are correct for *your* specific motherboard. Best I can do for now.
