( I heard rummors that Hayes was swammped and it would take forever to get my modem back, that is why i didn't send it in yet) Anyway i can't find my Ra number. My question is is it to ate to take advantage of the free upgrade offr for the 33.6. I still have my rececpt when i purchased the modem and i did buy it before the offer expired. Where was the unit purchased? Although that unit may be flashable, it is not flashable to any higher speed. (There is no flash upgrade from 33.6 to 56K.) The init string really depends on the application. For most applications a simple AT&F&C1&D2 will work fine. BBS init strings are usually more specific. Many BBS's require the modem to be in autoanswer mode (in which case you would add ATS0=n to the init string, where n refers to the number of rings for the modem to wait before answering, ATS0=1 tells the modem to pick up after one ring, etc.). Other BBS's require that the modem not be in autoanswer mode, however. I recieved my External Optima 56K Business modem yesterday, and decided to try it out on the BBS machine first. Figgured i'd try a -really- short INIT string ATZ| in (InterMail 2.50 GAMMA), and IT WORKED :) Then I tried it out with my ISP (Bellsouth.Net) a K56flex ISP here in Orlando... It worked again :) (at 56k speeds). This is the SECOND modem that's been "plug it in, and forget it". The first one was an Optima 28.8 VFC external (that I still have). There is one thing with the K56flex modem though. Whenever the modem inits, there's a "clunking" noise (like a relay closing). I have the speaker turned off, but the relay clunking sound is still there... Anything I can do to get rid of that clunking noise ?? --- * Origin: (1:363/167) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 259 HAYES MODEMS Ref: F1A00001 Date: 01/05/98 From: ALAN RACKMILL Time: 04:23pm \/To: TOM CARSON (Read 2 times) Subj: Autoanswer Tom Carson wrote in a message to All: TC> What command should I add to an initialization string TC> for the modem to NOT autoanswer incoming calls? This will answer the phone after the 2nd or 3rd ring. The Caller ID info is transmitted after the first ring, and before the second ring. So if your modem autoanswers after the second ring, you will get the info.
