I have an external Accura 288 V.34/V.FC+FAX, but seem to connect with my internet service provider at only 24000 and one of my downlinks at only 26400. Both of them run the danged USR modems. Is there some setting that I can change to get a better connect? Tom ... I started out with nothing. Qmodem's PDF for Hayes' product line is unlikely to cause any untoward effects as it it fairly generic, and the internal Zmodem engine is one of the better adaptations of the PD code. I doubt either is the source of the problems you are experiencing. Try modifying your dial string for the systems which you experience trouble with so as to include Q6%C0, and see if you expereince the same difficulties with those systems. Do you know what modems are being used by the systems with which you have trouble? Regards.... I suggested this approach to one of my downlinks, and here's his reply: === Cut === Interesting: I do the same to connect with you. S54 is a bit register. S54=64 disables that annoying V8 calling tone on outgoing calls; S54=32 kills the 3429 symbol rate. S54=96 combines both. Other values of S54 less than 32 kill other symbol rates (it offers a limited way to reduce the max. connect rate, and is sometimes needed when the modem can't make the correct estimation of the prevailing line conditions). I only added S54=96 when you took the 26400 cap off, to see if that would reduce the hiccup/retry cycles when we connect at 28800. It isn't helping much... === Cut === --- GoldED 2.50 UNREG * Origin: Wanna NEC? Init strings are more software than modem specific. What modem application are you using? Also, please issue an ATi3 to the modem and let us know what the modem returns so that we can see exactly what version of the modem you have. As for maximum speed, the modem will be set for maximum speed with just the factory default setting '&F', as long as your port speed is set to 38,400 bit/s or above. If you are transferring uncompressed data, you would gain throughput by opening the port at a higher speed. BD>About four years ago, I bought a Hayes Accura FaxModem 14.4 that I BD>never had a single complaint about. With that software, there are two BBS's with whom it BD>may require anywhere from four to six re-dials to connect. When BD>using Zmodem for downloads, CRC errors can run to **ASTRONOMICAL** BD>counts. There were 50-something of them a few days ago on a 1.5 MB BD>file! I am using QM's configuration for an Optima 28.8 V.FC, as BD>Mustang hasn't updated their PDF file for the software in a year. BD>I have two Accura FaxModem 28.8's. The internal isn't used for a BD>regular telecomm connection, and I have less experience with it.. BD>The number of re-dials required has remained fairly consistent all BD>along since replacing the Accura 14.4. And these repeats of the same BD>block of data weren't required any more frequently when the 28.8 BD>first went into use than had been possible to blame on phone line BD>problems with the prior modem. Since mid-September (I got these BD>Accura modems in May of 1996), the CRC's have become endemic! BD>I can think of nothing that has been done with or to the system to BD>affect the operation of a transfer protocol! BD>With one particular BBS (the local 1:387 NC), downloads would hang BD>on a block and Zmodem would keep requesting repeats until I gave BD>up on the download, almost always at about the 90% complete mark. BD>At this point, neither I nor QMPro are using anything other than BD>the default ("ATM"?) to wake up the modem.. BUT it does seem that BD>part of the trouble is the software. I don't like ProCommWin much BD>at all, yet on a couple of experimental calls, it *can* manage a BD>connect at either "problem" BBS with one call, and *its* version of BD>Zmodem seemed to be devoid of the CRC's. With uploads, the problem is invariably on the system you are uploading to. Usually if you are seeing CRC errors with an external modem, you can put any external modem (of the same speed) on the system and see the exact same problems (and that is a good test to see whether the problem follows the modem or the system). If you are using the DSZ module for Zmodem transfers, you might try adding the "-ha slow" parameter to the DSZ command line (handshake slow). TG>Tom Tom, You are doing very well if you are connecting at speeds of 24,000 and 26,400 bit/s. Depending on where I call (and from where I call), my carrier speeds will range from 21,600 bit/s to 28,800 bit/s on average. Unlike the slower modems, 28.8 modems are not designed to always connect at their maximum speed. They will first probe the line for quality and then establish the best speed carrier that they can given the current conditions on the phone line between your modem and the modem you are calling. They are designed to get the very most out of the phone lines, to push them to the limit. Given the fact that the phone companies are not even required to provide the necessary bandwidth on the phone lines to establish a 28,800 bit/s carrier, you may not be able to achieve a 28,800 bit/s carrier on your phone line and your carrier speeds may vary quite a bit. Do you see the same carrier speeds regardless of where you call? Can you try using the modem from another location and on another phone line? Be sure and remove any telephonic devices (answering machines, dialers, surge protectors, etc) on the phone line connected between the modem and the wall. This will be a test to see if any local device may e degrading the phone line quality. If this is the case, then putting the devices back on the line one at a time until your carrier speeds slow down again ould narrow the problem down to a specific device on the phone line. Please let us know what you find.
