When I call my BBS (this one, it has a Hayes Accura 28,8 v.34) I have to set my comm program to 4,800 to make a reliable connection. If I set it to 19,200 it will drop carrier after a few min's. All other users with 14,400 modems connect full speed. I'm I doing something wrong? any suggestions on my setups? After all, it's the CPS rate at the > end of > the day (or session) that we're all interested in... I keep a whole houseful of pet peeves. One of them is that terminal programs usually measure throughput in characters per second, while modem manufacturers usually talk in bits per second. The original messages have aged off my system, but I believe it is this difference in rating terminology that started this thread in the first place. I made the above quoted comment because I believe the world would be a much better place if everyone did things as *I* think they should be done, other peoples' views are mere annoyances. I was amused by a wire service story that originated in the United States and was then sent out on the Canadian service. Canada uses metric units. This story was reporting a heat wave somewhere and correctly converted the day's temperature to 41C for the Canadian portion of the network. The amusing part was a mere sentence later, "temperatures are expected to remain in the triple digits tomorrow". It illustrates the confusion that occurs when different units of measurement are used for the same common phenomenon. >JC> Rockwell Protocol Interface was also sent by >JC> Satan, but only because he likes to see people cry. > > Now available in V34 flavour. One day my logs show a garbled response from the modem and ever since it won't connect with anything. I tried resetting it to factory defaults and everthing. After many attempts I can not get it to connect with anything, although it does respond to AT commands and dial just fine. Anyway, I live in Ottawa Ontario (Canada) and I was wondering how I would go about getting the modem replaced. These modems to have a 5 year warranty don't they? I have borrowed an 28.8 Accura from a friend so sending it back is not a problem. By the way, my modem is one of the original Optima 288 VFC modems that has since been upgraded with the kit to an Optiman 288 V.34+VFC. ...Robin --- Tusqe v0.2 * Origin: RMR CSD (1:243/32) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 259 HAYES MODEMS Ref: DCJ00002 Date: 08/13/96 From: HAYES SUPPORT Time: 01:53pm \/To: ROMAN RUPP (Read 1 times) Subj: OPTIMA AND FAX RR> Support-Team! The upgrade to 33.6 for your modem will involve a trade-in to the OPTIMA 288 Business modem, which does support fax Class 2 as well as Class 1. You'll need to power the modem off and remove the front face plate. Underneather you'll find a jumper. Move the jumper to the two leftmost pins, away from the lights. Then power the modem back on and try it again. Please note that to send AT commands to the modem to reconfigure it after that, you'll neat to re-enable command recognition by reversing the process. Also note, there were a sizable number of Smartmodem 2400's that were shipped with the dumb jumper wired backwards, so that the dumb and smart jumper positions are reversed. You might try calling in from another location, this will help us determine if any phone line conditions may be a factor here.
