Uhh...I don't believe Hayes has released their K56 code for "public consumption." If they have, it is a well kept secret. I know K56Flex tests have been performed, but there are no K56Flex servers that I know of. I'm sure Hayes & other Co.s' are alpha/beta testing, but as for the public release of the K56 is to be released until the ITU-T recommendations are put into effect. Someone enlighten me if I'm wrong. The only thing that makes something be on com 4 is the jumper settings on the card. Unless it is software controlled. Just change the jumper settings to say that you 56k modem is COM4. There is one problem with that though. If you have one modem on COM2 you will not be able to use them both at the same time. --- GEcho 1.11+ * Origin: The Realm of Lost Hope 615-444-4779 (1:116/81) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 105 HIGH SPEED MODEM Ref: EBV00009Date: 07/25/97 From: MIKE FARRILL Time: 05:03pm \/To: PRATAP DERRICK (Read 5 times) Subj: USR V.Everything -> MIKE FARRILL wrote in a message to ASHER DENSMORE-LYNN: -> -> -> MF> Usr now has a Courier I modem which is an ISDN TA and a v.34 -> MF> modem. -> -> AND! I see, you are adding another internal modem. If you don't intend to use both modems then simply replace the 28.8's slot with the new modem setup for COM2. If both modems are working together, then setup the 56K modem as COM3 or COM4 with IRQ5 and drop it into the ISA slot. Adjust your terminal to use the new hardware settings and go make a connect. The name COM4 simply represents a logical device. Once the internal modem card is configured as COM4 it makes available a series of ports starting at port 2E8 with which the terminal software can communicate. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 * Origin: Juxtaposition BBS. However, I had a need for all voice modems. Therefore, I bought the Sportster; which has everything. Don't know why the Courier does not include it. But, I am prejudice about the Courier. It is by far the best around. Hayes is ok too but, I have never seen many full connects such as like above 28.8 with the Hayes. Cheaper modems sometimes are good and sometimes not. Mostly what they is, cheaper is not always better. If the modem is internal, then it will have jumper settings or some other method of designating it as Comm 4 (or whatever you like) and setting a proper IRQ. You would be better advised to put it on Com 3, though, and not skip a comm port. Make sure your modem and yo -> comm program are both configured for software (RTS/CTS) flow control. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I believe what you are reffering to here is (Xon/Xoff) flow control. Rts/Cts is a hardware flow control. Although most telecommunications programs have an option for the user to define whether the hardware is configured in this manner. You must still make sure that the com device is configured in this manner for it to function as such. RC-> You can generally receive data with no flow control enabled (because -> the CPU is so much faster than the modem, the PC never has to tell the -> modem to "wait Although most often true, not always true. Take for example these system configurations. Although rare there are still some in use today. System (1) is a bbs user, system (2) is the bbs being accessed. (1) - 2mhz CPU, 33.6k modem. Max buss at 19,200 (2) - 33mhz CPU, 33.6k modem. Max buss at max modem through put. Modem 1 & 2 can still negotiate a 33.6k link. However cpu #1 can not accept data from it's modem at that rate. If modems #1 and #2 are not BOTH configured for (Modem-Modem Xon/Xoff) flow control. There is a real possibility that buffer overruns WILL occur. RC-> but when sending data you will quickly overflow the modem buffer -> if you do not use flow control properly. This is very true. DH> Ok, but what if you know for certain that both the comm program and DH> the modem are both configured to use the software flow control? DH> Using Win95, are the default buffer settings the best or should these DH> be changed and what about the fossil settings on a bbs, what are the DH> optimum settings to be best for the most types of modems? In any multi-tasking enviroment you should look to see how much of the system resource time you are alocating to each of the com devices. Also look to see what it's idle time is set at. The best results can be achieved by lowering idle time to it's min limmit, and allowing it a large enough amount of the processor time. Thus allows it to process incoming data as efficently as possible. ___ Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 --- TriToss (tm) Professional 10.0 - #246 * Origin: The Other Side * Massillon, OH * (330) 832-0565 (1:2216/77.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 105 HIGH SPEED MODEM Ref: EBW00005Date: 07/26/97 From: VICTOR NG Time: 09:20am \/To: BUD JAMISON (Read 5 times) Subj: internal modem installati -=> Quoting BUD JAMISON to VICTOR NG <=- -> I currently use an US Robotics 14.4K external fax/modem, it is -> hooked to COM2.
