CD> That's really distressing...I always found medical care in CD> Ontario very good, but then I've been away for a few years... Bah. I disagree to that statement. You're simply believing the ramble of a liberal who can't deal with the conservative gov't's restructuring. The hospitals which have closed in Ontario is due to the merging with OTHER hospitals. This was done to save the gov't money. Why keep a hospital made for serving 1000 people open for 100, when a hospital 5 mins. away is only at 50% capacity? Ideas like this save quite a bit of money. However, there still are problems with health care in Ontario. Namely with the General Practitioner doctors (the ones which you or I would go and see or a checkup). They are way to busy, and are WAY to concerned with money ($$$) to do a proper job. We definately need MORE GP doctors in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Unfortunately, becuase of these GP doctors being too busy for their patients, they'd rather prescribe some prescription medicine than actually finding the cuase of the ailment and then working on a solution through that method, rather than relying on drugs 100% of the time. None the less, enough of my ramble. Have a great day! FDA Orders Destruction of Stevia Books On May 20, 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the destuction of 2,500 books about the herbal sweetener stevia. A small company in Arlington Texas, Stevita, Co., was visited by the FDA and forced to stop selling stevia and books that mention that stevia can be used as a sweetener. The Stevia Story by Linda & Bill Bonvie and Donna Gates was amongst the popular stevia books which came under FDA attack. According to the FDA order, "The presence of these publications renders stevia adulterated and unsafe for public consumption." Some have now questioned whether the FDA is now promoting "book burning" as a way to attack herbal products. Stevia is widely-used as a no-calorie herbal sweetener -- a replacement for sugar and for the more toxic artificial sweeteners such as Monsanto's aspartame/neotame (NutraSweet). Stevia has been used for centuries without adverse reactions and it is said to be particularly helpful for diabetics. Extensive independent laboratory studies have shown no danger from stevia use. The use of stevia as a sweetener is common in Japan, Korea, and South America. Because people are getting off of artificial sweeteners, stevia's popularity is growing rapidly in the United States. However, the FDA continues to try prevent stevia from being used as a sweetener with actions that many assume are intended to protect Monsanto, the manufacturer of aspartame/neotame. Stevia Resources There are many companies selling high-quality stevia products. A listing of a selection of those vendors can be found on the "Healthier Sweetener Resource List" at: http://www.holisticmed.com/sweet/ The above-mentioned web page includes detailed scientific and general information about stevia. There is no magic wand to use to do this, though there are some steps you can try. First, try to get recommendations as to good or bad doctors from friends. Second, I would generally suggest avoiding residents (doctors in the last years of training) if at all possible. This can be difficult, as they have earned the MD but have just not finished the accompanying training. Try to get staff doctors... they should be "full-fledged". Third, if a doctor does not listen, fire her/him and find another one. If you have not been going to a teaching institution, you might want to look into this (but remember #2). Teaching institutions are much more likely to have encountered strange medical problems. You might want to look at switching tactics... going to a naturopathic doctor, a wholistic doctor, or a nurse practitioner. Unfortunately, I am not sure any of this would be covered under your health care plan, so what you can do depends on what you can pay for. Good luck! Sue ...
