They should be able to easily ID Candida with a simple culture of your vaginal secretions. Heck, a simple stain will tell them if it is yeast or not. It does not take rocket science or even a government laboratory. However, if they did take a culture, it could take a week or 2 for a complete identification. I do have a couple of suggestions... 1) Eat yogurt with active culture. The lactobacillus is exactly what you DO want to have around. 2) If you are diabetic, make sure you keep your diet in control. If you don't know for sure if you are diabetic or not, ask your doctor for a blood glucose level (ESPECIALLY if you have a family history of diabetes). Even if you are not diabetic, limit your sugar intake. 3) If you are having sex with a male, have him treated for the yeast infection and do not have unprotected sex while he is being treated. He could be affected without symptoms, but giving it to you again and again with intercourse. 4) If you are taking antibiotics for anything, have your doctor seriously reevaluate the need. Antibiotics kill off the bacteria you want in your vagina (they keep the yeast from taking hold). It sounds as if this has been going on long enough that this should be seriously evaluated. I hope these suggestions work to help you with your problem... Sue ... Roses are green, violets are pink... It was not clear in your original post, and this is much more commonly a vaginal problem than anything else. I can see why they biopsied, then, as if it is persistent it may not be Candida but something more insidious. LN> The _supposed_ Candida really activates when I put Polysporin on the LN> "#3"... Have you had a culture or a KOH prep done? A KOH prep takes skin scrapings (hopefully gently taken) from the site and dissolves the skin with KOH. The tech then can look at it under the microscope and see if there are yeast-like structures there. However, it is not fool-proof by any stretch of the imagination. LN> Should be noted that I've had about 11-12 other "coliform" bacteria LN> acquired via a contimanated bathroom doorknob from a shared bathroom LN> and the last person to use it was very unhygenic and had several LN> blood transfusions.... For 35 years I never had any problems. Most of the problem pathogens simply do not survive well too far away from a nice damp, warm, dark place. Also, alot of the coliform bacteria are not only harmless, they can be useful in the correct proportions (especially in keeping pathogens from setting up). The big thing with looking for coliforms is that if the harmless ones are there, the harmful ones may have gotten there also... LN> First noticed something was wrong when my fingertips turned purple LN> and my palms becamed inflamed -- perhaps an inflamatory reaction. If this is the case, it could be a systemic infection. I don't know any titles, but there are some books in the health sections dealing with systemic yeast infections (if it is one...). You may want to go to a bookstore and see if you can track something down. If I remember correctly, there is a treatment option that deals with drastically modifying what you eat in an attempt to help your body kill off the yeast. The most important thing with this is to stick with it for awhile, as you will feel worse before you get better. LN> I'm not diabetic and HIV(-). This helps any treatment option out immensely. Glad to hear it. LN> Let me know if there is a Candida Albicans etc. FAQ somwhere... LN> please. I don't know of any such beast, though I have never been motivated to go look for one. I can only suggest looking in a bookstore, and if you live in a small town it may be time for a "trip to the big city" to look in a good-size bookstore. If you have internet access, I have heard that Amazon.com has a wonderful website for books of all kinds, but I have not gotten into "surfing the net" yet. Sue ...
