Your grandfather should consult with a natrapathic doctor [N.D.] in your area. I have seen posts from people saying milk thistle is good for the liver and shark cartilarge may help with prostate cancer. Also, anyone who eats cooked food should take plant digestive enyzmes. ... I think they are as addictive as opiates DA> Physical and psychological dependence means that if you stop taking DA> the drug you will go through a withdrawal syndrome, such as the DA> shakes and strange feelings you were having. Physical addiction by definition involves a physiological withdrawal effect. Psychological addiction means that you repeatedly seek to duplicate an experience because you desire the experience -- there is no physical syndrome in response to stopping something to which one is only psychologically addicted, except possibly a physical response to your anxiety at being deprived of something you enjoyed, not to the lack of the substance itself. DA> Everyone who is addicted is dependent, but DA> not everyone who is dependent is addicted. I take blood pressure DA> medicine. If I quit taking my medicine I go through a well-defined DA> withdrawal syndrome. I am physically dependent on my blood DA> pressure medicine. But calling me addicted to it would be DA> ridiculous. Why? Because you attach a different emotional meaning to the words? Of course, no one probably considers themselves addicted to air or water although we are dependent on them. This is because they are substances that are essential for life. But, if you define addiction as the body's dependence on a non-essential substance the withdrawal of which results in a physical syndrome, it seems that dependence on that substance (in your case a drug) is the same as addiction. Since it apparently helps you live what you feel is a better life there is nothing to be ashamed of -- no matter whether you call it addiction or something else. DA> Medical society here in the US has a very poor DA> understanding in general of dependence and addiction, and it leads DA> to further misuse of medications and poor treatment of dependent DA> patients. There is also the assumption that addiction in itself is inherently bad. In a society that attempts to depict everything in terms of black/white or right/wrong there is no appreciation of differing degrees of addiction or of putting addiction into the perspective of a person's whole life. For example, there are physicians who will withhold painkillers from hurting and even terminally ill patients because the patients might become addicted. This is absurd when the problem of the pain or the imminence of death and lack of ability to enjoy daily life dwarfs any addiction issue. It is amazing how self-righteously hypocritical humans can be in their "morality". --- * Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. Gayle Although SJW is astringent, which is characteristic of tannins, my references do not indicate that it contains tannins. I don't know that I would describe the sensation of astringency as involving a taste but rather a sensation of drying in the mouth or throat. It is the feeling you get in the back of the mouth and throat when drinking very strong black tea or crampbark decoction. Externally, you get this feeling when applying something like witch hazel to the skin. --- * Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. Dandelion is effective on the liver to clear obstructions, stimulate its functioning, and treat hepatitis. But, I have found no reference to it having anti-tumor properties. Your topic can be very elaborate. If you are interested in getting into herbal cancer treatment, I would recommend starting with Michael Tierra's _The Way of Herbs_ (ISBN 0-671-72403-7). This book includes discussions of herbs and formulas for cancer treatment. As for prostate cancer, I have had personally reported to me by people who have used the treatment instead of established medicine (they continued to get blood tests from their MD) that according to their "PSA" tests shark oil remitted the cancer. I have done no personal research on this and do not know what shark oil is, but this may provide a beginning for some more research on your own. Unfortunately, I no longer have contact with the people in question (although I have heard they are alive and well) to find out more. --- * Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. In fact I think you'd be hard put to find dried ground berries today! The commercial extraction/standardization/encapsulation technologies have advanced enormously in the past few years and all large manufacturers are finding that the STANDARDIZATION of concentrated extracts in all herbals is the way to go. They are prevented from making health claims on the label, so they appeal to the buying public by offering a responsibly prepared product with a good shelf life and a "swallowable" high concentration cap (gelcap for liquids). Formerly it was thought that extracts (of any herb) would have substandard shelf-lives, but that has turned out to be untrue, at least as far as Seronea Repens is concerned. --- InterEcho 1.18 * Origin: IC_STARS BBS * Madawaska,ME USA* 207-728-6427 (1:326/438) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN.
