I am interested in learning more about melatonin, a 'psychiatric' drug which apparently, until recently, wasn't allowed into Canada. It's one of those situations wherein I've heard the word or read it before (maybe even here) but didn't absorb any information on it at the time, and now a friend is having it recommended by her doctor and I'd like to help get more information about it. Is it a 'controversial' drug (such as prozac is); what is the 'plus' to taking melatonin compared to any drawbacks... Most important, are there any medicines more 'natural' that can be taken in its stead -- for instance St. John's Wort is touted as a valid and 'safer' medicine than prozac. For any and all comments, thank you in advance. Bright Blessings HB --- Blue Wave v2.12 [NR] * Origin: (1:241/99) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. I'm a psychotherapist...was waiting to see whether there was an actual issue in here. Sounds like you're asking yourself whether it's okay to be feeling what you're feeling. It's always okay to feel what you feel - all feelings are okay simply because they exist, and you can't control them anyway, so evaluating them is meaningless. What you can control are your actions and your thoughts. Youhave to decide, or figure out, or find out, what's appropriate behavior in your situation in your line of work, and then decide whether to act in accordance with that. -> One of the things I'm questioning, however, is has the medical and -> health care professions gone too far in the other direction? No one's interested in telling you how to feel. There are professional standards of action to protect both consumers and practitioners. --- PCBoard (R) v15.23 (OS/2) 5 * Origin: Exeter's Place * Gilbert, AZ * (1:114/449) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. Sounds like you're doing everything you know how to do. I think perhaps you must realize you are doing all you can and whatever the outcome is not in your hands. As you know, everyone is here to go thru a learning (whatever it may be) and at times there is nothing that can be done except let whatever is supposed to be, be. Perhaps the end result is already written and it's just a matter of accepting whatever that may be and realizing that it was some kind of learning experience for both of you. --- D'Bridge 1.30/002111 * Origin: THE SOURCE BBS Miami, Fla 305-624-2190 135/68 (1:135/68) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. It was introduced in the US as a sleep agent but they found that the dosages that were in the available pills were too much and it was causing many problems. It was been linked with other things rather than sleep now and does seem to affect the brain chemistry. I don't think sufficient research at this time has been done to see if there are any long term effects and at what dosage is the best and safest.
