I have no personal experience with saw palmetto and do not know anyone who has used it, but the above information is consistent with other literature I have read regarding this herb and was just passing along some information that seemed to be credible. Of course, the questions to ask are: How good is good? and How beneficial is something that "may also aid"? Often herbs are billed as "male" and "female" herbs because of their traditionally most common and most potent uses. But, they may also have effects that are beneficial for the either sex. I have found that, as a starting point, if you want to treat a condition or take a tonic, it is usually best to start with an herb recognized to be particularly potent for the condition or tonic use. For example, I would read up on the herbs to make sure that there are no contraindications for me and then choose something like licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and ephedra (Ephedra sinensis) and for coughs/asthma/bronchitis. On the other hand, if saw palmetto happens to be growing in my back yard and there is nothing about it that would prevent me from taking it, I would give it a try to see how effective it is. --- * Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. That's one of the amazing things about whole medicinal herbs as opposed to synthetics or extracts of only a specific chemical in a plant -- the whole herb often contains other substances that prevent the undesireable side effects that can come with synthetics or using only one of the chemicals in the herb. Of course, many herbs often don't (and some do) act as quickly as "modern" drugs upon acute conditions, but they are gentler. On the other hand, taking tonic herbs that help prevent acute problems often avoids the need for quick fixes. --- * Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. I have been on Dong Quai for 3 months now. You did not mention it helps with the eyes too. Do you know if there could be an interaction with Dong Quai and St. John's Wort? I can't tolerate Ginseng. It causes pain in my left shoulder but I have not experience this with Dong Quai. Although I have to watch the brand I buy because I can tell a differenc. Would be interested in hearing your comments. Another thing I learned if I take Dong Quai I don't need to take the aspirin and more Vitamin E. Thank you for your post. My western trained mind tells me that I can't become HL> emotionally connected to my clients/ patients, and retain HL> professional detachment. I assume that you have a question because you want to express your feelings and open the possibility of more than a sympathetic treatment-giver/treatment receiver relationship. Maybe the issue of professional detachment is related to professional effectiveness. It may become more difficult to do the best thing for the client when you are deeply emotionally attached. And, if you express your emotion to the point where the client reciprocates, it may also become more difficult for the client to make the best decisions for herself -- her concern for you may cause her to make decisions to benefit you rather than her. Finally, any reciprocal feeling may be due to what is called "transference", which gets many psychological professionals into trouble, including malpractice. There may be more benefits than detriments. But, the problem is being able to recognize what is going on when you are personally involved. You would do well to talk to other professionals knowledgable in ethics in other health fields to at least become aware of the concerns underlying personal involvement with clients. It would be very helpful to read up on transference, and possibly talk to a psychological counselor to explore the question of transference in this relationship. --- * Origin: 61 deg. 25' N / 149 deg. 40' W (1:17/75)
