I was drawn to this echo because the title "Alternative Medicine" suggested to me that I might learn something about alternatives to traditional edicine. After several hundred readings, I realize that some readers consider the echo to be "Alternatives to Any Kind of Medicine At All", others like myself consider it to be "Alternatives to Prescription Medicine" (herbology, e.g.) and still others want it to be "Prevention vs. Cure". There are many erudite viewpoints expressed here and I admit that they are all interesting to me except for the political debates and the backbiting which seem out of place. Will continue to watch, however. //========================================================\\ || D A V I D W I L S O N || || Mail: || || <70136.1171@compuserve.com> || || Location: 47deg 21min 16sec N 68deg 20min 46sec W || \\========================================================// --- InterEcho 1.18 * Origin: IC_STARS BBS * Madawaska,ME USA* 207-728-6427 (1:326/438) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. That is a symbol of just how far down we have slipped since the days when structure, discipline, and critical thinking were taught to our children along with reading, writing, and arthithmatic. Even the arithmatic is in question these days. My youngest's sixth grade class had no sixth grade math taught to it at all, this had to be learned in the junior high they went to. And that would not have been possible had my husband and I not spotted this and gone to the folks in the junior high. The use of marijuana among teens is esculating at a rapid rate. It doubled, and then doubled again. The number of high school seniors who have had sex, used alcohol and other drugs is much higher today than it ever was. And those are the kids who have stuck in school! There are no statistics, other than arrest records, for those kids who haven't. Kids who use marijuna don't tend to do well in subjects like math. If they take them in the first place. This county has a wonderful track record for its kids.......half of them do not graduate from high school. I'd say we have a long way to go to clean up the messes we've made in the past few years. * SLMR 2.1a * On a clear disk you can seek forever - JetMail v1.20*6 - Unregistered QWK Mail Door for Spitfire --- FreeMail 1.10 alpha-3 * Origin: PEACHY KEENO INN BBS * Tacoma,Wa * (206)539-0804 (1:138/190.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. I have tried diets that have a base of amino acids and other supplements for some children who are hyperactive with very good results. Not the Feingold. However, I see no reason why any child should be given a diet heavy in dyes and food additives. Most of them need this sort of junk food thrown out before they eat it. --- SLMR 2.1a Backup not found: (A)bort (R)etry (P)anic * Origin: My Desk, Puyallup, WA (253) 845-2418 (1:138/255) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. Most ADHDers do NOT outgrow it. If you read Hallowell's books, and the writings of Barkley, you'll see that it does extend to adulthood. The increase in the use of prescription meds for ADHD is traceable, in part, to the acknowledgement of this fact. What does help is that the child matures, learns coping skills, and how to handle themselves better. Counselling for child and family is very helpful. Behavior modification programs are useful. All work best with medication added in. ===>The Voice of Reason<=== mark.probert@juno.com --- * CMPQwk #1.4 * UNREGISTERED EVALUATION COPY * Origin: PC BBS : Massapequa, NY : (516)795-5874 (1:2619/110) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN.
