I think the displacement of indigenous people has been particularly effective in the US. You were lucky to run into shamans. My native American friends have none among their immediate circle. Its a shame because the people who lived here in California had a very extensive system of herbal medicine - knowlege which has largely been lost. Were I researching herbal medicine, local indigenous tradition would be the first place I'd look. There is only a handful of Ohlones left here now. In 1800 there were tens of thousands of them living around what was named by the invaders as San Francisco bay. A good deal of indigenous medicine was recorded by Franciscan friars in the 1700s but these books were later detroyed by protestand missionaries. Its not the first time that uniquely valuable knowledge was destroyed by politico/religious zealots.
