Most folks with > indigenous ties are very sensitive about it. Thanks for your (terrible) political correctness (what do you hope to achieve with all this?). Of course I know that Red Indians is not the correct term for any number of different tribes. But neither is "indigenous" for that matter as it is believed they were originally from Mongolia. Nevertheless..if I call them Red Indians it is both to distinguish them from the real Indians from India (Columbus made the mistake not me) and certainly no sign of any disrespect (we Europeans still know them as such and couldn't give a hoot about your fairly recent "political correctness syndrome"). The mere thought, for example, of calling myself a white caucasian rather than a fellow human being makes me cringe to be honest. It is indeed a great pity (and the Brits among others were also responsible) that the peoples of this world are still not regarded as human beings but as better or worse examples of the same according to the color of their skin, religion etc. > Many of my indigenous American friends like to refer to themselves > as > "Native Americans." Why not if they believe this to be so. The same goes for anybody else born in the U.S.A. As it stands now, the hearing (or lack of it) doesn't seem to be affecting him overly much. Besides, the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist recommended waiting until winter. Alan, you are correct, as far as you go. However, you should be aware that those Europeans that called our Native Peoples "Indians" did so because they believed that they had discovered the East Indies. Later exploration revealed that their discoveries were of a whole new continent, actually two new continents, but the name "Indians" stuck, dispite the efforts of some scholors to change it. If you intend to use the term Indians, then you would be more correct to use the term American Indians, although, as has been already pointed out, most of the peoples in question prefer the term Native Americans, or the use of thier tribal names, ie.
