NOBODY (and certainly not you guys in >> AF> the biolabs) has ever yet proven exactly what a virus is and does. ___------snip------------------ TR> To say that a virus, or more properly a single viral entity, TR> called a virion, is metabolically inert is incorrect. There is no TR> enzymatic activity within the virion because there is no substrate TR> present for the enzymes to react with. The term dormant is more TR> correct. It is hard to take up an issue with someone so well learned, Terry, and I don't pretend to know more. Rather, it gives me a chance to learn more. My humble understanding is that the virus does not react with any enzymes, but rather it replicates itself unchecked to damage the cells to cause disease, that's why it is metabolically inert. However, it is dormant before it begins to replicate itself to cause damage? Not recently, no. They would not have been tolerated some 10-15 years ago when I worked in hospitals full time. We had an outbreak of staph aureous at Tacoma General once, a long time ago on a post surgical floor. The nurses decided enough was enough and instituted the rigorous isolation techniques that are now considered both out of date and injurious to the patient's self esteem. We got rid of the staph. In the process, we learned that it was UNDERNEATH the surgical dressings which had been applied in the operating room. We called this to the attention of all of our surgeons and they took care of that problem by sending patients down to the unit without dressings. They used some form of liquid dressing that was sprayed on instead. Incidently, in case you don't know, staph aureous is called that as it makes a distinctive ring on a bandage. * SLMR 2.1a * It's only a hobby ... only a hobby ... only a --- JCQWK * Origin: My Desk, Puyallup, WA (253) 845-2418 (1:138/255) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 257 ALTERN. The reason is because honeybees in the US have decined in population by approx 40% during the past 24 months as a result of a number of factors, primarily a mite infection and the ever increasing use of pesticides. In fact there is a very serious concern among farmers that too few bees for pollination will markedly reduce yields in dozens of crops.
