Or back-the-front and front-the back. Problem with the algorithms that exist for front-the-back searching is that they tend to produce *results* that equate to *less* material on the board. Now of course if you where to take the back-the-front or push-me-pull-you approach as well as the front-the-back approach you'd end up programming far more powerfull chess opponents.
