It appears they are like Kflex. My ISP waiting until they got written assurances from the modem vendors that they'll all support the ITU standard, whenever that's effective, and they're now installing BOTH K56flex and X2 modems. I can pick the best price, and get the performance I'll love. :) --- Platinum Xpress/386/Wildcat! v1.3 * Origin: The Kat!, Wildcat!, and PX in San Diego Ca. Download a file from a BBS, and time how long it takes. A fairly large file, a mb or so. Let's assume the file name is TEST.ZIP and its 1 mb in size, and that you're downloading with a 14,400 bps connection. That should take about 10 minutes (assuming a throughput of 1650 cps). Now, copy that file to a new file with the command COPY TEST.ZIP NEWFILE.ZIP, and time that, too. The first time (downloading the file) gives you the throughput capability of the modem; the second gives you a pretty good idea of the throughput capability of the PC system, including the disk. On my system, it takes about 6 seconds to do that copy. That would suggest my system can handle data about 100 times faster than the modem can (a throughput of about 1.6 mb/sec). My system runs at 50 Mhz. An XT ran at about 8 Mhz. So, my system is (roughly) 6 times faster than an XT, so the XT throughput would be about 17 times faster than that 14.4 modem. More than enough to keep up. :-) There are gross simplifications in the above, but you get the idea. :-) Rick --- MsgedSQ 3.30 * Origin: The Warlock's Cave (1:163/215.39) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 105 HIGH SPEED MODEM Ref: EBQ00013Date: 07/20/97 From: RICK COLLINS Time: 07:24pm \/To: JASON MCMANUS (Read 5 times) Subj: problem On Jul 19 19:07, 1997, Jason Mcmanus of 1:3550/501 wrote: JM> I've got a Maxtech 33.6 modem that is bugging me. Possibly a new init string? Sounds very much like a flow control problem. Make sure your modem and your comm program are both configured for software (RTS/CTS) flow control. You can generally receive data with no flow control enabled (because the PC is so much faster than the modem, the PC never has to tell the modem to "wait!") but when sending data you will quickly overflow the modem buffer if you don't use flow control properly. Great download cps rate but the uploads are really lame, and on big files it usually ends up not finishing and dropping carrier. I don't think it is the modem though because I know other people using different modems having the same problem.
