Tiller in one hand, sheet in the other, body position important to angle of heel but easier to handle than racing small boats or crew on hiking straps.... Just have her sail 3 point triangles for a while, and sometimes tacking upwind courses with single downwind runs. Suggesting that she locate the names and hailing ports of every boat in a small unfamiliar harbor could also be a good exercise. DC> I have that problem when I steer a boat with a wheel. Most all are DC> set up to steer like a car. I should try the 'trailer trick' but DC> hold the wheel near the bottom. A wheel is much easier on a boat large enough so that you need to anticipate the nature of boat motion and reactions, and steer based on that rather than the greater sensitivity but lesser ability to lock things in place on a long watch than with a wheel based helm. If the wheel isn't natural, the odds are the rest of the boat's nature isn't either. (I'll make one exception to that for a little outboard a friend used to have, with loose steering, a misinstalled inverted operation wheel, but the ability to go 40+ knots. That was awkward.) Ever try a trawler with bow thrusters? How about a large sailing cat with widely spaced twin screws, which could do more steering than the helm in some conditions? Gordon - Unfortunately, like a lot of FIDONet echoes, Sailing seems to be dying as more and more people shift their focus away from local dial-in bulletin boards to the Internet. Also, participation in this echo has always slowed at this time of year, as boaters in northern areas of the US and Canada go into winter "hibernation". Those of us in the San Francisco Bay Area are lucky to have a year-round sailing season. How is your Merit doing? Planning any over-winter upgrades or accessory additions? I have had so much of other things to do lately I have hardly tuched it. I did add some 3/8 brass nuts to the turnbuckles on my stays and shrouds. The ones no there gave only a little drill hole to adjust with. So I took some 3/8 brass nuts and drilled them out to fit over the turnbuckle. Then I drill a 1/8 hole through the side of the nut at the tip of the lobe. I used a springpin and pressed it through the nut and turnbuckle. I had to grind off the extra springpin. Now I can use a wrench or my hand to adjust with. I always carry a cressent wrench with me. But not an 1/8 drill bit the use on the turnbuckle. Sence I trailer my boat I need something for the forestay. But while I was at it I did it for all of them. Next I will be adding a fish finder. I plan on placing it infront of my keel on the inside of my boat. My Portapoty sets infront of the keel. I am checking if there is enough room to place it there. I may have to go infront of it if it is to shallow. I need 3 inches to glue it down to the outer skin. But the more forward I go the more angle the transponder will set. It maybe better to see what is coming but the reading will be wrong. If I get all this done I will be looking for a solor panle to recharge my batteries. Do you have power at your slip? I have seen some with power and water. The Marinea at Pine Flat lake has no power or water, but the do have a guy who will pump your toilit for a cost. Millerton Lake gives you free dump. But you have to sail out to it. They have three floating toilits with pumps on them. I was watching the 49ers playing foot ball last week. They where talking how the bay this time of the year is the best weather for sailing. Are still sailing or have you put your boat up for the winter? Gordon ... Do you have power at your GK> slip? I have seen some with power and water. The Marinea at Pine Flat The slips at Folsom Lake have neither water faucets or power outlets, unfortunately. That's one of the reasons I decided on dry storage at Folsom instead of a slip. The dry storage is also a lot less expensive, $500/year vs $900/year for a slip. I have a 30 watt solar panel mounted on the foredeck hatch that works great. It keeps the battery fully charged, and I have never had to use a shore power battery charger since installing it. GK> where talking how the bay this time of the year is the best weather for GK> sailing. Are still sailing or have you put your boat up for the winter? I "winterized" my Catalina 25, and left it up at Folsom in dry storage, since I don't have a heavy duty tow vehicle yet. I took the boat down to Richmond once last winter, but it was a terrible strain on my 1/2 ton E-150 van, which is only a 6-cylinder engine. The van has a 4 speed manual transmission with a 7:1 granny low first gear, which is ideal for pulling the boat up a launch ramp, but the engine doesn't have enough power to run down the freeway at 55 mph with a big boat in tow. Most of the people in our sailing club that have Catalina 25's and Chrysler 26's use 3/4 ton Ford or Dodge pickup trucks with diesel engines to tow them. I'd like one myself, but they are hideously expensive, as much as $35,000 (which seems ridiculous for a pickup). For the rest of this winter's SF Bay cruises I will use my Catalina 22, which still hasn't sold. I just had to pay DMV fees and property tax on it again, so I might as well use it. I miss My C-25's much larger cabin, but the C-22 is much easier to tow and rig. The next Bay cruise I plan on attending is Dec. 6, in the Oakland Estuary. There's a big lighted boat parade that evening, and I think the cruise leader has reserved us slips at Alameda's Marina Village. After that, there's the New Year's cruise, and the President's day cruise in February, then it's back to Folsom Lake from March to September, with July 4th weekend at Tahoe. I am going to make an all-out effort to sell my C-22 this spring, even if it means cutting my asking price way down. I can't afford storage, insurance, DMV fees, and property taxes on two boats for another year. I've had the boat in the brokerage at the local Catalina dealer twice, in 1996 and 1997 spring-summer seasons, and he had a few nibbles but didn't sell it. This last summer was a real stinker for boat sales here in Sacramento County, due to Folsom Lake being 40 feet below full in April and May, when it should have been filled to capacity. There is a Bayliner dealer a few blocks from my house that I pass twice a day on the way to and from work, and it looked like they hardly sold any boats all year.
