I have only had my boat in Millerton Lake just north of Fresno. It is a small lake. My wife and I have sailed the boat about 15 times this summer. We spent almost every weekend and some week days sailing. The last time we sailed the boat the wind was so strong we last a batten out of our mail sail. I have to reef my main sail. I have never do that before. The boat is now in my backyard. We sublet a slip for two months at Millerton lake. It is a lot nicer not to have to setup everytime you go sailing. We are thinking of leasing a slip next summer for the year. The slip has to be 9 feet wide for my boat. My friends C-22 is in a 8 feet wide slip. Speaking of him. He hit a rock with his C-22. He winched up his keel before he released his mail sail. The boat went forward and cracked his rubber on the rock. Now he has to repair his rudder. The fleet at Millerton Lake has quite a lot of C-22 & 25. A friend of mine is looking for a C-27. If you know of one let me know. We is looking for an older one that will not cost a lot. After I pulled my boat out of the lake, I found quite a lot of algi growing on it. The boat has no antifouling paint on it. I am looking for a paint for trailering boats. One of these days my wife and I may try SF bay. But do not know where and how to launch and stay in the bay area. What sights and places to go. Is there groups that sail togeather to different places? Like a sight see group. And I do not know where I must stay out of. And I would need a GPS to get back home. Thanks for the reply. However, the underbody has a lot of wetted surface compared to other 22 foot designs that are more racing-oriented. The Capri 22, for example, which is made in the same factory as the Catalina 22, will run circles around my boat due to a simply more efficient hull shape. Everything is a compromise...My Catalina 22 has the most interior cabin volume and storage space you could reasonably cram into this size sailboat. We are thinking of leasing a slip next summer for the year. I agree, it's sure nice to have the boat ready and waiting in a slip and not have all that set-up work to do every time. I have dry storage up at Folsom Lake, which is not quite as convienient as an in-water berth, but costs half as much and I can still leave the boat fully rigged. I just have to load my supplies, food, and overnight bag on the boat, hook up the tow vehicle, and drive over to the launch ramp 1/4 mile away. The maintenance crew keeps the trees trimmed back from the access road, so the mast can stay up. GK> winched up his keel before he released his mail sail. Is there a chandlery or other place in your area that has the magazine "Latitude 38"? If so, the classified ads in the back are an excellent place to find Catalina 27's for sale. Come to think of it, Latitude 38 has a brand new web site that includes the Classifieds, so you don't need to try and find a copy of the actual magazine if you have Internet access. Point your browser to www.latitude38.com and click on "Classy Classifieds". I just took a quick look to verify the web site address, and there are no less than four Catalina 27's and three Catalina 25's for sale. GK> trailering boats. One of these days my wife and I may try SF bay. But GK> do not know where and how to launch and stay in the bay area. What From the Fresno area, you will want to come up I-5 to I-580, thence through Livermore and Hayward to I-880 north. As you go north along the bay, there are more marinas to choose from than you could visit in a year of weekend cruising. My favorites are San Leandro*, Ballena Bay (Alameda), Marina Village (Alameda), Grand Marina* (Alameda), Everyville*, Berkeley*, and Richmond Marina Bay*. The asterisk indicates marinas that have public launch ramps. The launch ramp at Grand Marina is right at the south end of the Oakland Estuary, from there you have quick access to a dozen marinas. Berkeley and Emeryville are right on the central bay, and Richmond is on the north part of the central bay. Richmond is closest to Sacramento, and is the marina we usually use for Fleet 4 cruises. Richmond also has a huge parking lot that I have never seen filled to capacity, so you can be sure of having a space to park your tow vehicle and trailer. GK> sights and places to go. Is there groups that sail togeather to GK> different places? Like a sight see group. And I do not know where I If you would like to meet us (Fleet 4) at Richmond, you would be more than welcome to share a Bay cruise with us. We will have cruises there on the following holiday weekends: Thanksgiving, New Years, Martin Luther King day, and Presidents day. We usually have a Halloween cruise on the Bay, but no one volunteered to lead it this year, so it was dropped from the schedule. Typically, we launch Saturday morning, or Friday for some who get there early, have a skipper's meeting at 09:00 or 10:00, and sail to a destination at another Bay Area marina. The destination is usually no more than 10 miles away, so it's easy to get there by early afternoon. Some people sail out to the Golden Gate or over to the San Francisco city front for sightseeing before heading over to the destination marina. It's very loose and casual, we're all there to have the maximum possible amount of fun! GK> must stay out of. And I would need a GPS to get back home. GK> Thanks for the reply. Hope to hear from you soon. Don't worry about finding your way around. As a new Bay cruiser you will be offered a "buddy boat" to help you. This will be someone who knows the bay, at least the areas and marinas we will be cruising, and this person will stick with you until you are safely tied up at the destination marina. There is usually a restaurant or two close by, and a group will go out to dinner, or you can stay on your boat and "eat in", just depends on which marina we're at... You don't need a GPS, really. The distances to be covered are no more than a few miles, and you can almost always see where you are going. You will need a San Francisco Bay navigation chart, so you can see where the shoals and hazards are. A few of the marinas we go to have dredged entrance channels, that you need to stay within the channel markers or risk running aground in the mud, but your buddy boat will guide you in, if there's a need for caution. Other than the fact that it gets dark at 5:00 o'clock in the winter, San Francisco Bay in the winter months can be really nice. Of course there is always the chance it will be raining that weekend, but if not, the wether is usually beautiful, and warmer than in the Central Valley! Let me know if you are interested, and pass this invitation along to any other sailors in your area. If you have e-mail access, my address is , and I get messages much more quickly that way. I only read this sailing echo on FidoNet once a week or so, since message traffic here is only a handfull of new messages per week. Hope to see you on the Bay!
