And, for those Mac types finding it hard to hook their PowerBooks up their GPSs, there's this little item: MARCH 17, 1997 Macintosh and GPS This tidbit is from: Steve Crandall. ------------------------------------------------------------------ In the early years of the Macintosh it was very easy to impress people as the interface was so completely different from the alternatives. Now that has become more difficult and there is a real need for programs that leverage on the coolness of the Mac. GPSy has been mentioned here before, but I'll post my own report. It is a very well-written piece of software that allows you to tie a GPS receiver directly to your Mac. Better yet, it talks to an inexpensive map CD-ROM (DeLorme's StreetAtlas 3.0). A few days ago we received a PowerBook 3400/200. As the new owner wasn't around I started to play with it (now I want one and he is going to have to pry it away from me) and downloaded the demo of GPSy and started working on a connection to my inexpensive Garmin GPS receiver. Talk about plug and play - the combination instantly worked when I plugged it in (similar software exists in the Windows world, but I know of people who have given up on certain brands of laptops as they can never get it working). The next step was to register the software (it is very inexpensive for what you get -- $30) and go playing. I drove to a park near here (the Great Swamp for those of you who know NJ) and attracted about 30 people in a half hour. People were astounded that you could do such things with a Mac and two of them even wrote down the particulars. If you want to have similar capabilities (always know where you are and "listen" to the atomic clocks on the GPS satellites to set you system clock accurately) you can do this without wiping out your wallet (assuming you have a PW with a CDROM drive) - GPSy is $30 - Delorme Street Atlas is about $20 to $30 with rebates - You can get a reasonable GPS receiver for about $150 - if you are afraid of making cables (the GPSy page has instructions) you can buy cables from them for about $40 Very very cool and highly recommended! Now when your wife complains that you don't stop for directions you can boot up the PB and figure out where you are. http://www.gpsy.com/ Be sure to send in the shareware fees -- supporting authors like Karen Nakamura is extremely important if you want to see cool things on the Mac platform. For that matter I recommend going through your hard disk and sending in the shareware fees for everything you use regularly. In my mind this is one of the most important things an individual can do (aside from not pirating software) to prevent the Mac from sliding into non-usefulness. * S2S Toronto, Ontario (416) 975-1547 --- WM v3.11/93-0359 * Origin: Ship to Shore, Vancouver,BC [604]540-9596 (1:153/7064) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 254 SAILING Ref: E3T00000 Date: 03/22/97 From: DAN CEPPA Time: 12:53pm \/To: LEE LESTER (Read 0 times) Subj: Quiz -> On 20 Mar 97 12:06:00, Lee Lester got back to Dan Ceppa DC> Get a Porsche, instead.
