Several recent requests from friends for a summary of it encouraged me to write this. It then seemed like a good idea to pass it on in several of the Fidonet Echoes. Hope that the subject fits them. =================================================================== Stabilizing cordage ends with SuperGlue Tired of all the fraying ends of cordage from shoelaces to 1/2 in. or even larger lines of cotton, nylon, polyolefin or polyester, 3 strand rope laid or braided? Use SuperGlue! Starting at the end of the cord, soak with standard SuperGlue a length of undisturbed cord, approx. 2 to 3 times the cord diameter. Allow to set for several hours. Cut off the frayed end with a sharp knife (or fine hack saw if the diameter is over about 1/4 in). Smooth the rough edge with a file, if needed. When cutting a length from a longer piece of cordage, soak a length approx. 4 to 6 diameters long and cut in the middle of the hardened section. Puts a rock hard end on the cordage that will take almost any abuse! The initial treatment of 1/4 in. or larger 3 strand cordage should be finished with a single coating of high viscosity Superglue, especially in the valleys between strands, to bind the strands together better. You asked for them :) Sailing Echo Rules The Sailing Echo is dedicated to the passing of information on all aspects of wind powered conveyances. In other words, if it's a blow boat, board, or even radio controlled sail powered and 12 inches long, it classifies as fair game for the forum. Although Power does occasionally come from other means, we attempt to avoid power only discussions, except where facilitating the operation of tall sticked craft in a pinch. Auxiliary power complications, horror stories or where to get that out of production part for the 1903 Wisconsin one lunger are encouraged, in order to remind us that the breezes run foul towards us all now and again. For sale discussions are authorized but only for a broad based knowledge of international price comparisons. If it starts to get specific, like I'll give you $50.00 less if you keep the Loran, or I'll give you $1,000.00 more if you throw in the cute bowhook, please take it net mail. We don't want advertisements in the messages to run us onto the sandbar. Keep the messages as clean as your boat and try to remember that your material is being read by a good number of people from all levels of experience. Rafting up on a user is discouraged, although we all like a depth charge tossed now and again, as it makes for some interesting discourse. Change the subject line frequently, in order to keep the topic and text flemmished down like the Admirals Barge. We hate it when the subject is "Spinnakers" and the text is "Anchors." It's like, "intercoastal waterway markers" and gets as confusing. Aliases are not allowed. If the system you post from forces you to use an alias, you must sign the message with your real name. I guess it is a steel plate about 10 TD> inches square and 1/4 inch thick. It has corroded around the compression TD> post to about 1/8 inch thickness. TD> So you wouldn't want to be out in a really big blow worried about it ! ------------------------ Sounds pretty serious, good luck with it. When you've finished the job, sanding and a good coating of epoxy brushed on will help keep it from corroding any sooner than you'd want it to. As for the mast question from your original post - have you decided whether you'll lower it or not? From my perspective, it seems so much safer to lower it. The amount of work for either method will likely be about the same, but you'll have much less to worry about if the mast is on the ground. Cheers, Augustin~~~=== NYC, Toronto - S2STOR - S2SVCR ... I really need some feedback from those CS> that have used other programs that track simular information, i.e, what CS> are the most useful features to include/not include. ------------------------ Since I've never used a database before, I can't really give you much along the way of recommendation, but I'd certainly be interested in beta testing it. I think it could be useful to have the ship's complete onboard inventory listed right down to spare fuses, as well as on screen reminders of items that will require replacement or maintenance at a predetermimed time, such as: flares, beer, engine parts, etc. However, these reminders really should be given as politely as possible! I guess it might also be useful (?) to have a financial page where the owner can do all his accounting to determine just how much it REALLY costs to own a boat! :^) Good luck with your program!
