Does anyone have any tips? In a high wind and being a novice sailor, you should get plenty of tips! Seriously, try renting a boat in a small, warm lake for your first outing. Should you do tip over, you won't mind the dunking. (Sequim Bay is about 45 deg!) Also, at least read a beginners book on sailing. Take a course if you can find one in your area. The local yacht club here trains some 90 or more sailors a year, including adult classes. The main thing is to have fun and continue to learn. No one ever can know all there is about sailing, which is why it is always fun everytime out there. ... Does anyone have any tips? I assume you are not currently a sailboat owner? I suggest visiting a sailboat dealer in your area (if there is one), and ask about getting a demo ride. Their self-interest is selling boats, and the more people who try sailing, the more potential customers they have. Also inquire about local sailing clubs, especially a Catalina 22 or 25 fleet. I belong to Catalina 22 Fleet #4 here in northern California, and we are always open to sharing our hobby with interested first-timers. --- HyperMail! v1.22 * Origin: Omni - (916) 388-0905, longest running Sac BBS (1:203/3333) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 254 SAILING Ref: D4300000 Date: 04/01/96 From: STRUTHER MACFARLANE Time: 12:55pm \/To: DAN CEPPA (Read 2 times) Subj: First Time Sailin' Dan: DC>The main thing is to have fun and continue to learn. Not sure, but I think I may have sailed _once_ with a few of them or their clones! BTW, looks like my first outing for the year is this coming Saturday for our Hospice race. There won't be a 'B' fleet, so my skipper opted to go with the 'C' class, cruisers, no flying sails. I'm a bit disapointed in that, but there is a silver lining: My daughter gets to go on her first "Outside" race! Depending on wind, it can be a 20+ mile course, and that's the one Mike and I are hoping for. Whether Natalie can handle it is still the open question. }:-) It's a lot different than the inside Sequim Bay racing, as the waves are much bigger. The Bay is more like a large lake. Oh well, I did remind Mike to bring an extra bucket for Natalie! (Besides, she probably won't need it, as she's weathered a 20+ knot blow on the inside on our C-Lark. Scared the hell out of her for a while, but she got into it and made the boat move quite well! Her sailing instructor praised her for her work!!!) ...
