I went out with him last weekend to try it out. He told me to ask you or anyone else who might know, what do you do with a dog on board for an extended trip on the ocean? Do you box train them, hang them over the side or what??? when they have to relieve themselves in one way or another? He has a small wired hair terrier that he wants to have as a sailing companion but this little problem has him scratching his head. Any suggestions anyone???? Well, thanks in advance for your help. GS==>Right now I almost wish there was a center post: I noticed some GS==>cracks in the fiberglass around the mast step. It looks like some repair GS==>work this spring. Most look cosmetic but it is structually weakened. GS==>Fiberglass and pieces of stainless steel will easily fix it. BUT it is GS==>too cold to try fiberglass this fall. You sound experienced in this type of repair. Shame to have it "hanging over you" all winter though. Give you something to fiddle with on those first warm spring days, before you'd normally launch anyway. GS==> They are interesting at that, I can preset a course and if you stray GS==>off-course an alarm will sound, alright if you are sailing with the wind GS==>but tacking into the wind would be noisey. Maybe if one was meticulous enough, one could program in the tacks as well :-) GS==> My GPS is portable but I GS==>found out it will be pickup three sattelites, an external antennae added GS==>a fourth for greater accuracy. For both the antennae and GPS itself you GS==>are talking $1,100.00 plus taxes. How accurate are they... 100 feet? More? Less? GS==> I have been in Lake Ontario twice and Lake Simcoe three times, I live GS==>in the northewrn part of Toronto and Ontario is a lot closer. Lake GS==>Ontario has lots of room for sailing and during the week you can dock at GS==>one of the Toronto Islands free. That would be pleasant. There's quite a bit to see there in the summer. Isn't there? GS==> There are only two entrances into the inner portion of the GS==>Toronto Harbour Eastern gap (Keating channel) and the Western gap GS==>(Toronto Island airport). Yes. I remember windsurfing (and swimming) the Western Gap when I went down for the "Mamoth Marathon" a few years ago. They also warned us about the cable ferry that "don't stop for nobody"... gotta be extra careful not to fall off along its route, I suppose. Due to harbour regulations you have to have a GS==>harbour licence, a written and practical test required. A harbour map is GS==>needed to prevent accidental groundings around the islands. Any Ontario GS==>map will show the channel entrances. Is there a charge for the harbour license? If not, it would probably be nice to be able to drop my boat in there for a few days in the summer and visit the islands. You don't happen to sail out of the Scarborough Bluffs club do you? The reason I ask is a friend, Doug Wood, keeps his boat there and I believe he is quite active in racing. I'm surprised that he's not in this conference. Also a cousin, Ross Eddie, sails down there somewhere. Both have boats of about 27 feet. Next time you're planning to sail in Simcoe, let me know and I'll give you directions to my place - north end, a couple of km from the Narrows. Talk to you later... Mur. * Live an E.P.I.C. Shaun: Unless your boat was a homebuilt or especially built (custom), most places that sell sails already have the sizes recorded. I had a working jib made for me and all the information they needed was the name and model at Genco in Toronto. Depending on the sail you need main or jib, you will need the height, foot length, and information on how the sail is attached. Some main sails use a rope slug or a sliding carrier. As long as you have the manufacturers name plate and serial number that is all you should need. I also have a dremel tool and I should be able to do some of the work this weekend, although I may see what happens on sunday (maybe a last sail). -> How accurate are they... 100 feet? More? Less? Three hundred feet accuracy normally, DGPS is the enhanced version of GPS (US Armed Forces) and gives an accuracy of 100 square feet or less. Solar flares, land mass, and metal can decrease the accuracy slightly. -> Is there a charge for the harbour license? If not, it would probably -> be nice to be able to drop my boat in there for a few days in the -> summer and visit the islands. Yes there is a charge I think about four dollars and there is an annual renewal. Actually there isn't too much to do, most of the Islands are not navigable (low bridges and shallow water). To see the islands I would suggest bike, walk or the train that travels around the islands. -> You don't happen to sail out of the Scarborough Bluffs club do you? -> The reason I ask is a friend, Doug Wood, keeps his boat there and I -> believe he is quite active in racing. I'm surprised that he's not in No I don't, there are public boat launching areas and so far I have used Bluffer's Park (Brimely Rd.) and West Humber (about half a mile west of the Humber River) launching and vehicle parking is free. -> Next time you're planning to sail in Simcoe, let me know and I'll -> give you directions to my place - north end, a couple of km from the -> Narrows. I have a navigation map of Lake Simcoe, and I will give you a call, but it will probably be next year now. I also have my Marine VHF licence and the boat is named the CANDE. Spelling is correct, my parents initials are 'C' and 'E' - thus CANDE. I would like to spend a few days up there maybe a long weekend next May. You might be interested to know that my main is 12 years old and it is still a good racing sail. Mind you, I have had it recut at least twice and last winter I had full tapered battens installed. When the wind pushes the has sideways feel how much tension is on the windard shrouds. This is at least a couple of times greater than the tension that you would put on at the dock. I am not familiar enough with the Siren to help at all with tuning. Try hopping on a local Shark and see what the rigging looks like. Some of the ideas may be of use. Hope your sailing went well. There was good wind here on Saturday, as you might have expected, I tried to sail Sunday.
