DC=>Sounds like there are really working their way towards the DC=>interior... A big part of the problem of them getting into the "interior" lakes and such was people with trailerable boats... if they hauled a boat out of infested water and then launched it in another body of water the same day, the little suckers were hardy enough to withstand the trip! DC=> MC> So, I'm told, you end up with very clear water, but few living hings DC=> MC> in it. They also clog water lines etc. Yup - that they do; but the other drawback with the "exceptionally" clear water is that light gets down to the weeds which are now growing like little forests down there... complete with colourful flowers on them! The weeds, in turn, will stop a boat from moving either by wrapping themselves around a keel or diminishing your propeller blades into a swirling cone of useless green stuff! DC=>Haven't heard recently, but I guess that has been a big problem DC=>in NYS around Niagra Falls area. No worse than anywhere else around the lake... a bunch of us were in Youngstown this past weekend and, for lack of anything better to talk about (we'd already discussed the weather ), we stood around the edge of the dock and looked at all the BIG weeds growing down there. * OLX 2.1 TD * Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. * S2S Toronto, Ontario (416) 975-1547 --- WM v3.11/93-0359 * Origin: Ship to Shore, Vancouver,BC [604]540-9596 (1:153/7064.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 254 SAILING Ref: CDE00050 Date: 09/05/95 From: LEE LESTER Time: 11:15pm \/To: STRUTHER MACFARLANE (Read 6 times) Subj: Swimmin' Zebras Is this a case where theoiry doesn't actually occur in practice? Hey Mike, MG>Well first things first even hobbie cats handel differently, i have a MG>16' and am trying to sell a 14' (covertly). As far as a big (23' and MG>up) look at all options a slip is very expensive, and where and how MG>often do you sail? do you want to go anywhere (shallow draft) or can MG>you stand staying in shipping lanes? MG>just a few things to look at. I kinda figured that even two exactly built-alike boats would handle differently, what I am looking for is, is it irrational to *learn* on a boat the size that I am contemplating? As far as a place to keep one, I have that taken care of and luckily at very little expense. And yes, shallow draft is very much needed. The central FL area Gulf Coast is mostly shallow. This is again one of the reasons I have looked to the Tri's design. MG>--- Michiana's Mail Hub! Can't help but ask..where do you sail up there in Hoosier? We have some distant Yankee realitives (seldom mentioned ;^)) that live just east of Michiana in Angola area. Lots of nice lakes around there. Thanks again for your input! I saw it in a book GH> and it looks pretty good but I want to talk to someone that has sailed GH> it. The Coronado 15 was my first sailboat and I loved it. It has all the sail adjustments as the larger boats and is a good learner. There is one thing you should take into consideration, are there other Coronados in your area. I had one of three on our lake. When I joined a local sailing club I was the only one in my class. It was awkward and hard to compare performance. If this is your first, I would look the other boats being sailed in your area. You'll have a larger base to learn from. Don - Chatt.TN P.S. What's the cost of the Coronado? Is it new? ... We have the same dream. I purchased a Hughes 35 "DNA" for the trip and am learning how to sail it while I install additional gear. So far i've installed an Autohelm Autopilot w/remote and interfaced it with a Magellan 5000DX. The water maker is next on the list. DNA is currently a pure DC boat with solar panels. I also work in computers and am not sure if this setup can support all the toys I want. Did you install a radar, weather fax, life raft, EPEB, and/or ham radio. If so which ones did you select. I have about reached the conclusion that all are required for the type of sailing I plan. Your thinking would be appreciated. I have also looked at the air-bag float systems. The thought of leaving DNA for a small raft in a storm is not something I like to think about. Thanks Don - Chatt.TN P.S. Ho! What of batteries did you select. ... I have seen some adds for avon dinghies and have noticed they are priced rather high in comparison to Quicksilver. Is it the fact that the floor is not rigid ? Does the inflated floor feel solid under foot. Is it high pressure ? Is it easy to deflate and inflate ? You comments regarding towing and saftey are very good info. Once again thanks for taking time to respond. We sail on the St Lawrence and found that in the 1000 islands a parking spot (mooring) is hard to come by so people tend to boat around in their dingies. They also go to the marina to shop etc rather than loose their over night mooring if they move the boat. --- DB B2300sl/003704 * Origin: The DataCom System - Cornwall, Ontario (1:248/1)
