Hi JH>CM>Jeff, I have done this using RTV (bath tub caulk) to "glue" it to JH>the hull and JH>CM>the results were just OK. You lose a factor of two in sensitivity. Jeff, couldn't help noticing this thread, especially since I'm proposing to do the same with a Humminbird fish finder to use as a depth gauge ...but the manufacturer's instructions include a through-the-hull mounting option, and they quite specifically require the use of epoxy glue and specifically say NOT to use caulk! The instructions suggest Humminbird's proprietary epoxy glue, but I don't see what difference using another brand could make. They caution that you should not introduce air bubbles when mixing the glue. I was going to use a type of caulk until I read the instructions. * S2S Toronto, Ontario (416) 975-1547 --- WM v3.11/93-0359 * Origin: Ship to Shore, Vancouver,BC [604]540-9596 (1:153/7064.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 254 SAILING Ref: CBE00003 Date: 07/07/95 From: JEFF HASZ Time: 07:03am \/To: ADAM CZERECHOWICZ (Read 9 times) Subj: DEPTH SOUNDER JH>CM>Jeff Hasz ask re mounting depth sounder transducer inside the JH>hull.... I wonder what the difference is...maybe something in the caulk reacts with the type of plastic the transducer is encased in?...or does it introduce an accuracy factor...anyway, it shouldn't be too difficult to use an epoxy glue instead of caulk... There are a few other types of "adhesives" around these days also...I wonder if any of them would work just as well and not have the problem of all the mixing and mess...and such... Thanks for the info...I'll look into what this manufacturer says... Hi Struther, I replied to your last two messages but erased them without sending them during a blonde moment. I recall the first one about loose sailboats-- Actually, I jest, they would retrieve it I think. Boaters in general are all pretty helpful. They won't give you the right of way if you're sailing though. Most of them up here don't know the rules and the others think that FISHING gets the right of way! I can't recall the other message at the moment but I believe it was a shot:-). I am in Vancouver B.C. and I am looking at a Newport 28. I am told that they were a C and C design built in California. The one I am looking at is a 1981. If you have any experience with these boats, or if you know how they perform, quality of construction etc. I would be most interested in hearing from you. Mary, the Lonely Island I meant sits in the middle of upper Georgian Bay off the east coast of Manitoulin. It offers no harbour, and is uninhabited. Surrounded by pretty deep water, and truly "lonely". I know the area you mean though, it always reminded me of tidal flats...with the tide out. I stop into Olphant every now and then, for the Saturday flea market, which used to have this couple who sold pretty good preserves and jams. I haven't been there this year yet, wonder if they're still there. I'm sort of into keelboats, tend to stay away from those light blue areas. MP>I will be visiting that area the second weekend in July for the first MP>time in about 15 years. Is there an art fair going on at that time? The Bruce Peninsula Art Show starts Aug. 1st. I will have some stuff at the Dreamer's Gallery in Lion's Head starting Saturday Jul. 15, though - . "Art World" in Owen Sound and the "Golden Gallery" in Tobermory feature local art.
