Is there a VS> simple way of figuring the range of scope of each boat? (x ft. of VS> chain, boat swings out x number of ft.? There is no easy formula for figuring out how far the boat will be from the mooring block, but this will work. l = length of chain from the block to the tire (or float) d = depth of water x = distance that the boat will drift downwind from the mooring block (Don't forget that you have to add the length of the rope to the length that the boat will drift) x = Square root of (l squared - d squared) [if somebody is used to looking at ASCII form x=SQRT(l**2-d**2) At TS&CC we use, starting from the lake bottom: 1. Concrete block with re-bar loop cast in. 2. Chain about 1 1/2 times the water depth. 3. Wheel and tire for a float. (free at a junk yard) 4. 8" diameter ring to hold the tire onto the chain. 5. TWO 18" lengths of chain to hold rope mooring lines far enough from the tire so that it doesn't rub against the edge of the rim. Of course each end on each chain requires a shackle. 6. TWO nylon mooring lines spliced with thimbles and snubbers. For boats less that 3000 lbs 1/2 line is OK. 7. Chaffing gear where rope passes throught choke on deck. A picture is worth a thousand words. If you sen me your snail mail address I'll send you a sketch. It may also be nice to put a float on the lines to make them easier to grab when you come in. The best floats that I have seen are made from Pool Noodles (!!!) available at CTC for $2.99. One Pool Noodle makes about 4 good-sized floats. I can't recall the weigth of your boat. This may be overkill. But, it is better safe that sorry and this will last for years (except the bottom of the main chain in a sandy bottom). r * OLX 2.1 TD * Eschew obfuscation. * S2S Toronto, Ontario (416) 322-6814 --- WM v3.11/93-0359 * Origin: Ship to Shore, Vancouver,BC [604]540-9596 (1:153/7064.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 254 SAILING Ref: CAKG1296 Date: 06/12/95 From: GENO DELLAMATTIA Time: 10:25pm \/To: DAVID WHALEN (Read 6 times) Subj: Disabled Sailing Mods DW> Might you be with the Disabled Sailing Association of B.C.? Do your boats have weighted keels or centerboards? The boat uses a joystick for the rudder. It's easily managed by people with limited arm and hand movement if rigged properly. The keel has a bulb, mounted on a crank to lower it as a centreboard. The rudder also flips up, making it easier to launch and retreive from a trailer with a "catch person". But in real life, it was sad. Sure I saw it go down and could not beleive my eyes. I was thinking, what would I do if my sloop went down like that....it happens! I was 3 times on the Atlantic with my 38' and took 30' waves in 47 kts of wind. It then crossed my mind that this was an eventuallity, I got spared! The next Cup not before 5 years, you say? This is the first news that I have of it. I guess that it is expensive enough and a 3.8 million head country has to recoup a little before the next round. I wonder when the US will be ready. They really got caught with their undies down. This fellow Britten that you mention has a good reputation already here. He was previously involved in some other Cup racing. Now which one? Well, we are having our summer here now and in a few days, I will be sailing my sloop to Lake Champlain. Look at a map of Vermont and you will see it is quite a large lake. Not the ocean but lots of water to cover. Where do you sail in NZ? Strictly around it? The ocean here is 5 days away motoring with the mast unsteped. But when you get there, FUN! Just use silicone and glob it on good so that there is no space between the transducer and hull that is not taken up by the silicone.
