Hi Greg, This is my first time on in this echo, but when I saw your post I just had to reply. I too have steep electrical needs while on the water. My wife has M/S and requires air conditioning in order to stay on the water down here in Florida. I am looking into a Monterery 296 (a beautiful boat!!). I think I am getting a good price at around $73k for it (new). The problem is that when I add in the 4.5kw generator the price goes up by $5k. The dealer is telling me that I can't put my brandnew 5kw generator onboard because it is air cooled. I suspect that there are $$$ reasons involved. :) The 296 (at that price) comes with a 9,000 btu air conditioner which keeps the cabin very cool. I had thought (for a moment anyways) to try to rig something up with inverters. We use inverters in our van for my wife's hospital bed and alternating air matteress with no harm to the battery. Btw, the 296 comes with twin 250 merc's with 80 amp alternators (on each) and three batteries as standard equipment. I was thinking that I could put up to ten more batteries in there with inverters and then charge them back when the engine was running.... but even if this is possible, ten marine batteries will run around $700 and then the inverters themselves will bring the cost up.... maybe I'm better off just putting out the additional $5,000 for the factory installed 4.5kw generator and be done with. What really gets me is that the sales tax on the 296 is almost as much as the generator. As for your coffee problem.... down here on the Gulf of Mexico, warming things up isn't the problem :). I used to have a poonton boat that I rigged up to make coffee. Basicly I just had a box that directed the sun's rays to a glass flask (the water would actually *boil*, on some days) and then run the hot water through an unplugged Mr. Coffee. The power of the sun is unbelievable... but consider that the water temp in the Gulf goes to around 90F in July and Aug. As someone already said... it isn't the speed but the boad. The Mirage has a 175 horse jet motor and a super hull. 0 to 30 in 3.1 seconds. It'll all but snap your head off when you slam the throttle full up. And how about a quick turn?? The guy that demo'ed the Mirage did a 360 "donut" at 45mph, and then dig out at full throttle and jump a three foot wave. We caught about 5 feet of air. I've been in fast boats before but this was a radical ride.... not just speed but also instant response. We are getting a 30' Monterery 296 and are looking into the Sand Marine Mirage 175 jet boat as a tender. Officially it will be for my son, but he'll probably have to fight me for it. Speed doesn't have an age limit btw. :) The Mirage 175 is right around $15,000. Pretty cheap.... Hmm, I could live with that!! :) We run a Regal Commador 277 on Lake Huron.. Our season here starts around mid May and ends early Oct.. In reality though the only real good boating is in June through Aug.. May is often full of late spring thunder storms and the lake is still about 55 d.. Also the nights are "crisp" By late Aug your into the unpredictable wind.. Often blowing the lake up to 10' to 12' waves in a mater of a few hours and unlike the ocean those 12'ers come at you about 30' apart, brutal stuff.. Right now "Distant Thunder" is sitting on blocks froze stiff and with 2' deep snow all around her :( As for running air off of inverters, man it would be extreemly inificiant! Hope you pay a ton less for fuel then we do! One rig on a truck we used to have at work would be slick but would limit you to having hydro only when anchored.. It used a gennie that was engine mounted.. 5500 generac, belt driven. A switch forced the rpm to something like 2200 rpm and locked it out so you couldn't go higher or lower (to keep it at 60 cycles I assume) Advantages were cost, maintainance (lack of) and quietness.. As for the cost you have to pay for a water cooled gennie, that isn't bad at all compared to Canadian and the tax's you complained about? A $75K boat in Ontario would see you pay an additional $11,250.00 in sales tax's, we have a 7% GST and an 8% PST applicable on almost all items. On top of that our gas is about 60 cents a litre, usually closer to 70 cents at marinas.. There is just over 4 litres in an American gallon so figure almost $3.00 gal :) Neat eh?!!? But our air is clean! ;) ------------------------------- * Fidonet: Greg Moore 1:2424/222 * Internet: Greg.Moore@Sbbs.gryn.org ------------------------------- --- PBNet v1.95 #20 * Origin: Sandpiper BBS, Best in the Beach!
