Seems as though the Quicksilver RS> Lower end had something to do with the Mercs winning most of the RS> races. Or did I just dream this up? I know that back in the 1920's RS> and 1930's that the difference between Johnson Sea Horses and the RS> Evinrudes was just as dramatic a difference as there was between RS> Fords and Chevrolets and the rest of the bunch which were also rans. JZ> In years past, I too believe you are correct. I replaced a (75hp) 64' JZ> rude with a (110hp) 71' merc and improved the gas milage from 45 JZ> minutes per 6 gallons to 1 hour per 6 gallons.(on the same boat) Now JZ> I believe they are all quite reliable. I wanted a Merc, but the cost JZ> was another $2000, so I settled for the (140hp) Suzuki and have been JZ> quite happy with it over the past 5 years.... what else can I say. JZ> Regards Joe Of course we were discussing 10 HP to 35 HP motors. They diddn't have these big monstrous Motors back then. In Fact, my Dad's 36 HP Johnson Sea Horse was about the max back in the 20's. They were all Hand cranked back in those days too. You always had to have a spare crank rope with you in case one of them broke. ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 * LAKOTA v1.5 --- Alexi/Mail 2.02b (#51) * Origin: The Port Brew | S. A. They're essentially an automotive engine. The 6.5 Liter engines are the ones that GM instals in their 3/4 ton pickups. They are a V-8 of 397 cu. in. displacement. The beauty of these units for my conversion, is that they bolt right on to the existing bell housing, and mounts. I have limited space in my engine compartment, (app. 50") so I'm a bit limited as to what I can squeeze in there. They are rated, (I'm told), at 200hp. The engines I'm replacing are supposed to be 230hp. All in all I think I'll have plenty of get up and go. As you probably know the diesel develops its max torque at a much lower RPM than the gas engine. This should help to get up on step a lot quicker. Hi! Well, some of you may remember.. I had the old 1966 boat with 1966 100 HP Johnson. Actually, I still do. Anyone who has parts for the motor please msg me, I'd be interested in acquiring them. I now have a new joy in my life, a 19-20' 1990 steel cruiser. It was made by a welding company up in Bracebridge. However, they put a 120 HP Volvo on it. This boat weighs 3500 pounds. Can anyone tell me: a) How to optimize it for maximum speed - (I don't give a #($@ about acceleration... :) ) b) What the maximum speed should be considering the engine is all rebuilt and taking into account the opitimization recommended in a? :) I'd really appreciate any help... this thing is nice for cruising, but it's only a 4 cylinder and I'm wondering if the guy underpowered it large when he built it.
